Hello --
I bought a Truglo TFX front sight, which is advertised as their "extreme duty" sight. "Indestructible" and all that.
That being said, the package says it's simply made from CNC steel.
I tried to drill through it with a properly sized #54 bit, carbon steel. First in my dremel. It melted the first bit.
Second bit, I tried to go slow and use more pressure. Dulled the bit and forced it back up into the chuck. (Both drill and dremel chucks are rated for the bit diameter).
Okay, fine, maybe I cheaped out on the carbon steel bit. So I bought a six pack of M42 cobalts, advertised for hardened steel.
Two bits, just spins and wobbles, like it's trying to go through diamond or something. Hand drill and dremel both. Tried adding cutting fluid. No difference, just heats up and spins.
Feel like a total idiot. I do my own installs -- build and barrel ARs, time muzzle devices, trigger / action jobs on my handguns, but I don't pretend to be any kind of machinists. Amateur driller. I don't own a drill press, most complicated job I've done myself is drilling out holes in the masonry to anchor my safe.
Anyone have any tips? Much appreciated.
