Went on-line this evening to see if Colorado DMV is back to normal on driver license renewals. Connected to the website, clicked on the appropriate link, found myself with an option for on-line renewal.

Interesting! Pre-pandemic days, Colorado allowed mail-in renewals for those under age 65 as long as there were no recorded violations, suspensions, etc. Age 65 and up required a visit to the DMV office for (minimum) vision testing, plus additional hoops to jump through for those with a history of violations.

Fill in the blanks, give a certification under oath that I have had a vision exam within the past 3 years, make an on-line payment, and my new license will be coming in the mail in 10-14 days. OK, had the cataract surgeries a couple years ago, blasted out the old worn out original lenses, got new lenses (with serial number inscribed and wallet card), restored my tired old 70-plus eyes to 20/20.

Good to go for another 5 years!

Well Colorado may be doing one thing right.:)

But on a serious note are you able to get the new REAL ID version of the license for air travel or is it just the standard DL?

Before I left Kansas I needed to renew my DL and couldn't get the REAL ID because they didn't like my Birth Certificate. It was a State issued one and the only one I had ever had.

She also wouldn't take SSN card because my Mom laminated it in the 70's. Funny thing is it was so brittle the card came right out of the lamination.

I had lived in KS and had a Kansas DL for 37 years.

I had to order a new one from the State where I was born so just took the standard knowing I was moving back to birth state once I retired.

I asked lady why the birth certificate and SSN card that got me in that was issued got me in the Army and into every job I ever had was no longer good?

She said "Oh, you been in the military? Do you have your DD214?".

I asked would that get me the REAL ID?

She replied "No. But I can put you are a Veteran on your DL."

Told her you don't even believe I am an American so just give me my regular DL.

My PA DL expired last May, right around the time I messed up my back, and could barely walk. Since covid, PA has been offering renewal on line, using your picture from your about to expire lisc. No need to come to a drivers lisc. center.

So I renewed on line.

Week later I got a temporary lisc., along with a photo card I was supposed to bring in to a drivers lisc. center to have my pic taken, and lisc. issued.

Called and complained, as it kind of defeated the whole purpose of on line renewal. Was told it was mainly because of the covid lockdowns, but she would process it for me using my old pic.

Sure enough, my new DL arrived in the mail a week later, using a picture from my DL before my last one - the one where I still had hair and a dark beard. Figure if I get stopped and questioned about my sudden ageing, I'll just blame it on covid....

I gotta renew my DL soon, I am really excited about it. :-(

Have a blessed day,

I normally wait until I receive the renewal paperwork by mail, but your post convinced me to try it online.

My license doesn’t expire for a little over three months, but they allowed me to do it early. They did ask a lot of redundant questions on the payment page, but it went through no problem.

I’ve been able to renew my CPL online the last few times too. It sure beats driving and waiting in line or mailing in the forms.

Thanks!

Most times we can renew by mail here in Florida but every so many years go in for a new license. Florida never shut down so I just went by the DMV and renewed mine last year. Same with the tags.

DHS has delayed the Real ID requirements until 2023, which is good because in Virginia, you have to make an appointment with a DMV office. I understand getting an appointment takes a long time and you might not be getting one at a location near you.

I got my license last time on line but this year I had to go in person because I was told on line is every other time. It worked out very good because I had cataract surgery last year and I passed the eye test without glasses and got that restriction removed from my license. Larry

Quite awhile ago Arizona went to a no renewal needed until age 65 system. So I'm good for a few more years. My 16 year old son got his first license a couple of months ago. The expiration date is in 2070.

Wait until you hit 75, In IL anyway you have to take a actual driving test every time you renew. I'm told that over 80 I will have to take a driving test every 2 years, as well as a vision test. If you get any tickets you have to also take the written test.

To get the Real ID in IL you had to furnish your "original" Social Security card, (I had the "duplicate" originally issued, but that was not acceptable, only the actual original card). In addition two picture ID's and two items that verified your address, like a utility bill from within the last 60 days. Took me two trips to get mine done, and yes I did furnish my DD214 so they can put Veteran on the license. There are lots of places now giving discounts for veterans.
