I have a full size M&P 40 that has a problem with keeping a mag in place. The mag button will drop the mag with the very slightest touch, no more then a 1/64 of movement. If you bump the mag button when in the holster while drawing the mag will drop free. I've sent this gun back to smith and complained about this problem and they sent it back saying it was not a problem. Is there a heavier straight spring that I can replace the factory one with and fix this problem. As it is I won't trust this gun for SP duty.

I was having the same problem with my M&P40c. I pocket carry and it would get bumped or pressed in some way. I removed some plastic on the mag reliece butten so it wouldn't be higher than the side of the gun. I still drop the mag with my finger when I want to but It doesn't do it on its own now. A new one butten is easy to get so I didn't worry about modifying it.

The gun was made during the first year of production, has about 1500 rounds down the tube, and the holster has been several, from crossbreed to Fobus. I,ve tried bending the spring, put tape on off side of mag to increase mag button bite. The problem as I see it is the spring is way too weak, compared to a dozen other makes of guns, by far the weakest. I,m sure if more people checked their guns with a fully loaded mag in place they might find that they have a problem waiting to happen. Go ahead take the slide off your M&P, slide a fully loaded mag in place and then see how little mag button movement it takes to release the mag.

A couple of more points to make are S&W has already replaced the mag button and this gun has been doing this since new.

Interesting to say the least. But since you seem to be one of a very few with the problem, I would say the M&P's are not plaqued by this. I have heard this before, but not in a while and it only affected some of the earlier models. I have at least 5 different holsters and 4 different M&P guns and have never even remotely had a problem. As for trying the mag with the slide off the gun, makes no sense, as I don't carry the gun with the slide off, seeing the amount of spring travel does not matter to me, it works.... I've checked all of my guns for a light spring, everything seems normal, I've tried empty and full mags, normal. When I install the mags I hear and feel a very sharp and distinct click. No matter how I push the button or hold the gun, unless I have my finger on the button and push it, it ain't falling out.. I don't see anywhere on the holsters to make contact with the release button, so the holsters aren't the problem... from what I see, the only reason your mag falls out, if everything is as you say ... is your finger or some part of your hand is pushing that button.. maybe you just have one of those hands that needs to go back to the factory for adjusting.. jkg.. it's stuff like this that makes me wish I could see it first hand. Because I just don't see it from the info you gave us, something seems to be missing. Have you tried other magazines, newer ones? If it is that bad, I would absolutely send it back and insist it be made to work properly.

I've read of this issue a LOT, with the earlier production guns. Give S&W a call, and have them send you a call tag to ship it back AT NO COST TO YOU, for repair.

This gun has been back to S&W 3 times for problems, The mag problem is the only one that hasn't been fixed right.
