I haven't had a haircut from a barber at a barber shop in about 2 years. I've been getting my hair cut by a neighbor going to cosmetology school. On her free time, she gets practice and I get a haircut, so it works out for both of us. I pay her $10, and

She'd been busy for the last couple of months and our schedules didn't match up and I'd been getting kinda mangy looking.

I went to my old barber and the last time I went to him it was $15 and a $3 tip - not bad. Best part is he doesn't cut my ear with the straight razor!

Anyway, I get the same haircut, I didn't even have to tell him what I wanted, same result - a great haircut! When I came time to pay, I figured prices went up, maybe $20, worst case, $25.

No, $30!!! He says that's about average, now!!!

Making small talk with him, he says he does at least 10 people a day!

Barber shops are a cash business. Cha-ching!!

(I hope to go back to my neighbor)

Funny you should start this thread, as I just got my hair and beard cut.

Went to a local chain, did not have a appointment. Got seated in a work chair about 5 minuets later and the girl asked me what do I want. I said make me look more civilized! She laughed a bit and I told her how much to remove from both scalp and beard and OBTY get rid of the nuisance hairs.

Time to pay up and the cashier/manager said $18. The girl did a decent job so i dropped a 5 as a tip.

Been going to the same place for the last 25 years, run by a bunch of Asian ladies. Started off at $1.99 for a cut and up to $7.99 as of now. I tip a couple bucks so they get a ten dollar bill when I go in.

Same kind of deal here, started at $3.99, now $12.
I give them between $15 and $20 depending on whatever..

I changed barbers because a close friend advised me that I would be more comfortable with the politics in the place he was recommending, the only barber in a very well-off neighborhood just as close as the one I had been going to. Just a few years ago, he went from $15 to $17. I continued to tip him $5 (I think my hair is slightly more difficult than usual). When we went through the COVID drill, I paid him for the five or six haircuts I missed. Didn't cost ME anything. Didn't want him to suffer for something we both had to go through.

My barber has gone up a little the last few years but I guess it's a sign of the times. She gives an excellent haircut and I have no complaints. A cut including eyebrow trim, which is needed as much as the cut, plus the tip runs me $20.00. When you see how much it costs our wives to get their hair cut we're getting great deals.

The 13 months from Feb. 1965 to March 1966 that I spent in Korea with the Army I could get a haircut for 25 cents, a shave for 25 cents and a massage for, you guessed it, 25 cents. I have hated going to the barber ever since! When I got back to CONUS a haircut alone was $2 to $2.50.:mad::mad::mad::mad: My current barber charges $25, but I don't tip her since she owns the shop! Could get a haircut twice a week for a year for the same $25.

My barber is in his sixties and has been cutting hair for over forty years. His dad ran the shop before him. He has a second chair, and occasionally one of his daughters will come in to help out, but it's usually just him.

There's a stack of magazines...Western Horseman, American Rifleman, Fly Fishing, Popular Mechanics. Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, Women's Day, and People will not be found.

He still lathers up your neck and uses a straight razor to shave it. His daughters do the same.

His price has been $12 for as long as I've known him. One of his daughters, however, told him that he needed to get with the times and raise his prices. He did...reluctantly I might add. He raised his price to $13. I always give him a twenty and tell him to keep it.

It's a great place for old guys to hang out, chat, and get the latest news.

My guy still charges $12, he does a very good job and he is very pleasant to deal with. I give him a $20 and we are both happy to see each other.

Still remember the days of 25 cents, then 50 cents, and a buck. But during those days I was making less in a month than I carry around for spending money every week now, and driving a pretty decent 3 year old used car that cost $600, and gasoline was still under 35 cents per gallon.
