The M&P 40C is a striker fired semi auto. Also known as a double action. Does the trigger actually "cock" the striker? After you pull the trigger on an empty chamber pulling the trigger again does nothing until the slide is activated.

I need some help understanding on how this works.

APEX kit makes it feel and act like an SA (which is technically is as you discovered)plus lowers the trigger pull weight :)

On a similar line, is it correct that the Shield IS fully cocked by the slide and that the trigger just pushes up the striker block and operates the sear (releasing the striker)?

It's not double action, because on a double action gun, every time you pull the trigger, a hammer goes back, & then drops. On the M&P semi line, there is no hammer, & the trigger only works once, until the slide goes back again to re cock the gun. Glock calls it "safe action" which I think is a great description, because it's neither single, or double action. GARY
 
Glock drags the striker back from a prestaged point (which is essentially the point at which the striker block safety is reengaged and the striker is back on the sear face)and then drops out of the way completely.

The M&P just drives a teardrop shaped piece under the forward edge of the sear which causes it to lift dropping the rear edge and releasing the striker. The M&P is ready again when it is effectively cocked by the motion of the slide. The stroke is shorter than the cycle stroke and that is why some perceive it to be partially staged like the Glock.

I think the above is a correct description of what happens inside the Glock. The S&W M&P, like the Springfield XD Series pistols, is fully cocked, for lack of a better term, and the trigger action merely releases the striker to fire the pistol.
 
Because the striker fired guns are completely contained in the slide, and you can't see what's going on, I believe there is a lot of misunderstanding about them.

As Shawn said, this is true for a Glock, but not true for an M&P.

The M&P is a single action gun.

Not really. there is no "half cock" on a striker-fired pistol.

When you move the slide to the rear at least 3/8", the rear of the sear pops up under spring pressure. As the slide returns forward, back into battery, the end of the firing pin is "caught" by the now popped-up back side of the sear (it pivots on a sear pin) As the slide continues it's forward travel, the firing pin is held back by the sear under the pressure of the firing pin spring.

When you pull the trigger, the loop of metal at the end of the trigger bar pushes up on the front of the sear (causing the rear of the sear to pivot down), while the vertical piece of metal simultaneously pushes the striker block out of the way, clearing the firing pin channel. The firing pin is released, traveling forward under the pressure of the firing pin spring.

The pistol goes click on an empty chamber, bang if there's a round in there.

Repeat for each cycle of the slide.

Again...no such thing as "half-cock" in these pistols.

In the unlikely event of a sear failure, the striker block, in the down position (as in not being pushed up and out of the way by an intentional press of the trigger) will block the firing pin channel and keep the firing pin from traveling out the breech face (like if it's dropped, etc.).
