In 2004 and again in 2006, I rode my bike to Sturgis. We stayed at the Buffalo Chip campground. Why? Because with the biggest outdoor stage west of the Mississippi river, they have tons of big name bands playing. Lots of classic rock bands I've seen Styx there. Also Heart, George Thorogood, Lynard Skynard, etc. etc. Now most of the classic rock groups were great, they played the hits and for the most part sounded OK. They tended to look like hell. George for example looked OLD in 2004. They weren't what they once were. Vocals were shaky, solos were muted, etc. Except ZZ Top. They were tight and right. Sounded great, had the dips and guitar spins in there and put on a great show. Some of the other bands seemed to be picking up a paycheck with no real zeal for the music. ZZ Top seemed like a bunch of young guys who really wanted to get a record deal. Even after 30-40 years in the business and albums and touring they played those songs with feeling.
A little tidbit. I think it was Dusty who got busted with a .22 in his boot. You can take the boy out of Texas.....
R.I.P. Dusty Hill. The Afterlife All Star Band just got a little better.
