Eagle Stag grips on S&W K Frame

Well folks, you see I have this S&W Centennial I bought before CCW started here in Texas. Yes I had a good gunsmith put on the red insert and I did an action job, added the stag grips, and a Tyler-T.

Now I am thinking about doing the same for a S&W 66 2 1/2 inch Combat Magnum of the same era (but it already has factory red insert front sight.)

Now I see Eagle makes some stag grips.. $450!!!

Do you guys know if the Eagle grips are worth it?? Do you have a sample of them you use?

Here is my gun and a sample of Eagle's work. The Eagles also come with S&W logo medallions (which makes me wonder if I got those J grips mighty cheep years back!)

Check Grasshorn Grips or on some occasions you can find some on the Forum listed by BigMountainMan.

Both top quality and I never came close to paying that much.

Here's a set of bigmtnman's pre war N frame moose magnas. You'll be very happy with his work and for a lot less than $450.

I will third that! Either one is a better choice. I put a set of Grasshorn's K frame stags on my 3" 66-2 and ordered them with Medallions.

BigMountainMad did these on my 66-2 2.5". Fabulous grips and a great gentleman to deal with. What I paid was a fraction of the price of Grasshorn and Eagle grips. After buying several pairs of grips from BMM I just can't bring myself to pay the asking price others are asking for grips that are no better than what BMM produced. Unfortunately he's not producing or not producing many grips now but as mentioned they do come up for sale here occasionally.

Everyone is free to price their work where they feel it's worth and inflation has driven almost everything through the roof. But I just can't bring myself to pay $400 and more for a set of grips unless they're really something special.

Seems like these were around $165.

I think the Eagle stag grips are worth it. I have them on Rugers and a Model 15.

You might contact BMM just to see if he's still making any. He retired from making them but decided to make a few more. I think it was more of a hobby or a way of picking up some mad money more than a full time job. In any case he didn't take orders and just produced what he felt like at the moment. He's a very nice guy and I doubt he'd mind if you contacted him to see if he's still making these. Hopefully you'll get a set of his grips.

Here is a set of Patrick Grashorn's smooth elk,

And a set of caribou from Ken Driskill (bgmtnmn). (edit to add). These are not caribou. These are smooth elk with a couple decades of use.

I don't believe I have Eagle money tied up in both sets combined.

I went with Sambar Stag on mine. I went with Spresser Cusom Grips for the round butt but he seems to not be in business now.
Talked to Eagle about getting some but you don't get to see what you are getting.
The square butts came from Rodgers Guns and Grips. He seems to have a lot of Sambar Stag Grips listed on Ebay now.
Type in Sambar Stag Grips and his will come up or go to his Web site.

His stag grips are made from Sambar Stag. That's the reason for the high price. Of course, 20 years ago, you could have gotten them for about $125. I really think bigmtnman and Grashorn make superb quality grips from Elk antler.

In 1980 I spent $35 for my first sambar stags (Colt SAA) from Melvin Tyler sight unseen and they were excellent. I also bought great Ajax stags and prices creeped up to $95 in the late 90s. The more well heeled shooters at cowboy shoots looked down their noses at them preferring ivory. But they started liking them later when prices increased (?!). Now prices are nuts.

I think the Eagle stag grips are worth it. I have them on Rugers and a Model 15.

They're worth what the market will bear. In light of the many magnificent stocks made by bgmntmn and others the only question is whether or not you like these stags so much that you'll fork over $450 and the seller knows that someone will. That does not make them "worth it", it makes them priced for the market.

There is nothing particularly functional about fancy stocks. Some might argue they give you a better purchase on the gun but I don't buy that argument and the ones that I have from bgmtnmn were purchased "just because".

Ken does business his way. No website, no orders taken. When he feels in the mood he will carve out one pair, or three, but only when he feels like it. He then posts them on the appropriate forum and hopes someone likes them as much as he does! It is simply a matter of scanning the for sale sections to see if anything is listed.

Cutting stocks is not his job. It is not his vocation. It is his avocation and as long as it is enjoyable he will continue doing it. Once it becomes a job, he will be done!

Do I wish it were different? Not really, I want him to keep cutting stocks for decades!

I have Bigmountainman grips on a couple of mine and they are nice. If you want another option check out Zane Thompson at LSCG (Lone Star Custom Grips). You can find him on Instagram under those names. He does extremely nice grips in a variety of materials.

I have to agree. I like the elk stocks as well, but much prefer the looks and feel of the sambar stags. I bought two N-frame sambar sets from Eagle many years ago; forty dollars a pair. That seemed high at the time and it probably was, but they still look new and these are on revolvers I shoot regularly.

I have two sets of Eagle Sambar Stag I was fortunate enough to pick up used at two shops I frequent for a very good price. The price of new pairs from Eagle is WAY up there.
I also have three sets of elk from BigMtnMan (one with medalions)and I consider myself fortunate on those also. One pair of Grasshorn also purchased used. I like the bark on the Grasshorn - shown on model 19.

I purchased some wood grips from Eagle and the fit wasn't good. I sent them back and they are better but not great. You may have better luck.
