Early 57

Picked up this model 57 6” a couple of weeks ago.

Will request ship date from Mr. Jinks to see if it might have shipped in the early velour lined presentation case..I might know where a case is located

Nice find, those velour lined cases are harder to find than the early guns. I've had the six inch first year 57 for ten years or so and have been looking for the correct case all that time. Finally found one at the Symposium this year, thanks Doc44.

We're pretty close. My fist year is serial # 250125 and is a 4"

Ship date

According to Mr. Jinks this gun shipped in January 1965.

Now to try and determine if it may have shipped in the velour presentation case

Would a letter specify this information or just it shipped in a case?

I don't know that you'll be able to confirm 100% and don't think a letter will do that. If I remember correctly it has been said here that the velour cases were used only during the first six months of production and according to the Standard Catalog 57s were shipped as early as March 1964, maybe earlier. But then S&W didn't ship in order and one of the earlier boxes could certainly have been in inventory in January of 1965. If you can find a velour lined box why not use it? Good luck.

I believe your Model 57 would have shipped in a presentation case with the velour covering. I owned one shipped in December 1964 and one shipped in January 1965 and they both did.

Looks like the velour case would have been been shipped with the January 1965 ship date.

My son picked up an early velour case at the NE Ohio Bunch gathering this past spring.

It was verified by our resident presentation case expert.

I’m sure the gun & case will be joined up here in the near future.
