We use these at the shop where I work. They work pretty well around the machines but I wouldn't use them for shooting! Still pretty cool in my humble opinion.

IMO earplugs work fine for outside shooting, especially with 22s. Indoors, it' s plugs and muffs for me. I also use muffs when working with power tools or even vacuuming.

Recently I've been shooting at a local 50 yard indoor rifle range that charges pistol rates for those shooting handguns. Since they are rated for some pretty hefty calibers, I always double up on the hearing protection. Not only does it help to protect what hearing I have left, it also keeps the pulse rate down a bit. Which as I have found can be critical when your trying to get a good group at 50 yards.

Wal-Mart sells orange foam ear plugs that have a rating of 32. I use those, and add muffs if I think it's going to get really noisy. I have no idea why S&W would put their name on something with a rating of only 22.

They may cost more, but you can't beat the Peltor TacticalPro (26db) or Tactical 7S (24db) series electronic muffs. I got a set for T&E and immediately purchased 2 sets for myself.

I usually run with those big thick foam orange earplugs, or else my pair of Winchester earmuffs (non-electronic). Goes for shooting or power tools.

+1. Shooting exclusively outdoors at my home range (except for if it's not the best weather.. then I have a roof I'll go under) the foam plugs work just fine. Being under the roof makes things slightly louder, but the foam plugs still work. I have a pair of the muffs, but they rarely get used.

I guess I'm a sound/noise wimp. I wear both the foam ear plugs and the electronic ear muffs whether I'm shooting inside, outside, alone, or in a group. I find the noise extremely uncomfortable if not muffled. I seem to be overly sensitive to noise and it may have to do with hearing damage suffered years ago in an industrial environment, I don't know.

In fact I'm considering going back to the non-electronic muffs for practice sessions (non-match) as I think the non-electronic muffs can be had in the higher noise rating?

Which muffs have the highest noise rating?

Thanks
