My name is Marty Winston. I'm Editor of the Newstips Bulletin. For the past 30 years, I've written every word of this weekly bulletin service that is only ever read by other journalists. Many of my readers are with "big footprint" media: TV, radio, newspapers, mass circulation magazines, etc.

Normally we cover products that make a difference in personal productivity in an office, home or mobile workspace.

About 6 months ago, when my investigations uncovered major growth in personal weapons ownership, I felt compelled to expand out coverage. I wanted to deliberately avoid any political discussions, so I started by reviewing the "peripherals and accessories" of gun ownership. My "poster child" weapon is the full-length 4.25" barrel Smith & Wesson 9mm M&P.

When I began these investigations, I also began shooting (something I hadn't done since qualifying in the USAF in the 1960s). My skills initially sucked. They're not absolutely wonderful yet, but after hundreds of rounds per month, they no longer suck. In December I was able to qualify for a CCW (Geauga County, Ohio).

I've had great support from the NSSF and from vendors across the industry. I've already had close to a hundred products in for review and more are coming. I'm even in discussions about doing an early-morning network show along the same kind of "peripherals and accessories" lines.

So please forgive me if I ask a lot of questions or if I sometimes sound like a school teacher delivering an essay question for the finals. Reporting is my job, but it's one that requires confidence in my information, and that requires learning.

My thanks in advance for helping me learn.

Remarkably, with a lot of support and interest.

I've been pretty good about creating a lot of cross-over interest; for example, tools that seem specific to cleaning guns are also pretty damned useful at cleaning small electronics parts in printers or scanners or even BYO PCs. Tactical LED flashlights have a universal interest. When I cover holsters, it tends to be based on some clever angle, like bedside or seat-front mounting. Dry boxes and dessicants apply to a lot more than ammo.

That lets me mask the mix a little so while some of each issue's reviews are purely gun-related others are purely not-gun and some are in that middle ground.

I've learned that a lot of my readers - all of whom are journalists - have shooting histories of their own to share, so by and large, it's not at all a reluctant audience - though some remain reluctant about including these same products in their own coverage, some are looking at my lead as a way to include these topics.

Thanks for asking.
