Due to the recent Supreme Court ruling, NJ has eliminated their “justifiable need” requirement for CCW, meaning that CCW is now available for normal people (not just retired LEOs and the politically connected). All you have to do is go through the long and annoying application process with references (which you already gave to get your NJ Firearms ID card) and fingerprinting (same) and qualify with your chosen weapon(s). That last part is something new!
The best info I have says that you must select one or two pistols that you own and shoot a course of fire at 7, 10, 15, and 25 yards on an FBI Q target. Before I pay the money to have an RSO document that I could do it (of course his statement must be notarized because New Jersey) I went to the range to see if I could do it!
Even though I had not previously taken my CS9 out past 7 yards, I am happy to report that I was able to hit 48/50 with the little bugger yesterday! The difficulty of the test is a bit misleading because only A) the FBI Q target is pretty big and B) you only need an 80% to pass, so you can actually miss all your 25 yard shots and still pass if you did well closer.
Anyway my group wasn’t exactly stellar, but it was 96% hits which is good enough, so I’ll have to sign up and do it again for real. Hitting with the M&P 2.0 3.6 compact was a bit easier since it’s bigger, has an Apex trigger and hi-vis sights. It seems like the state is allowing people to include 2 pistols on their application for now, with guidance coming in the future for how to add additional pistols, so I’ll be going with these 2 for now.
But that brings me to the questions - is anyone here carrying a CS9 (or 40 or 45)? What holsters are you using? Leather or kydex? Appendix? Strong side? Pocket? Are you comfortable with the capacity compared to the modern one and a half stack semi autos like the P365 and Shield Plus?
This is new to me so any advice is welcome!
