I have an easy chair in the living room. It's fairly close to the door that goes out to the back yard. Often in the summer I leave it open to cool things off. There's an end table next to the chair with a drawer in it. Currently a 625 Mountain Gun in 45 Colt lives there; its double action would be proof against accidental discharge from the scissors, magnifying glass, pens, etc that share the drawer space.

I've been thinking of replacing the 625 with a DA 45 auto. I collect Model 39s but know nothing about the S&W line of 45 DA autos. The space is not quite big enough for a full sized Colt Series 70. If it doesn't come with adjustable night sights, it would have them soon after I aquired it. What do you recommend for this situation?

Well, I would bet you could get a 4513/4516 in there, maybe even a 4566 or a SIG P220, but really, what is wrong with your 625? Just looking for a change of pace?

The Series 70 almost fits. It has a high rear sight and without that it would probably fit. The 625 is nice and I like its power, but I'd like perhaps one or more rounds. Hoiwever I don't plan to sell it. Also like an auto pistol as all my other house guns are autos.

I'd like as big a S&W 45 as would fit. Prefer all metal, but would take plastic frame if nothing better offers. I orignally had a Glock in there but was worried about all the other stuff rattling around in there. Don't think I'd have to worry about that with a DA triggger pull.

Its against my better judgment to suggest this, but, instead of having a high value irreplaceable revolver or 1911 in the drawer, you might consider a M&P45c. If it would disappear, you could always find another one. It not that bad of a pistol.

If you are looking for a DAO S&W 45, may I suggest a 4586? I prefer the TSW model personally, but you may find the regular model to your liking. Roughly a Commander size 45, I find the trigger pull smooth. I also enjoy my 4583, but they are a little bit harder to come by.

If you are willing to consider traditional DA/SA I suggest 4566 or 4563. In my opinion, they have no equal.

Rather than having the gun in a drawer at home while you are home why dont you have the firearm on your person while at home and disarm at shut-eye time?

I'm lazy, and I already have three other guns strategically scattered around the house now. A Colt Series 70, a Colt Combat Commander and a Rock Island Arsenal Compact, all 45s.

OP I see from your post that you have some semi auto pistols, so I'll assume you are, like me, a revolver guy with semi auto experience.

While the 4516 and 4513TSW are fine reliable and accurate 45's, unless you have experience shooting "small" 45's I would suggest you go with the 4566. The 4566 being commander size and exhibiting revolver like reliability, would probably suit your needs.

The 4566, 3913 and HK USP pistols are in my experience as reliable as any revolver. I've yet to experience a malfunction with those three guns.

The smaller 4516 and 4513TSW require more attention to maintenance and a firm grip to insure correct function. In my experience anyway.

Springs must be attended to regularly if you shoot them often. And drawing one from a drawer in extremis might result in a less than perfect grip.

The 4566 is much more tolerant of such things and I would have no doubt of it functioning correctly after being left loaded for an extended period and pulled out for emergency use. My 0.02 Good luck! Regards 18DAI

Actually I'm a semi-auto guy with some revolver experience. Most of my 45 shoting has been with full sized 1911a1s, but I hae a RIA compact I've shot some and the recoil doesn't bother me.

Right now, it's in the gun room and gives me something to put in my fist if i'm playing in there at night and hear 'noises off'. I'm looking for a DA 45 auto to put in the end table (DA because of all the stuff rattling around in that drwer), and I don't have a DA 45.

What about something like this:

for about $16 you could attach the gun under the drawer - that way it is still readily available and if someone did happen to pop in and pull the drawer open they would not be able to grab the gun and go.
of course they might notice the drawer is heavy or yank it all the way out - I wonder how strong those magnets are through a thin piece of wood - magnet underneath might hold the gun don just enough to deter a grab and go. then again - magnet and gun sticking off the bottom of the drawer might not work since it would interfere with the drawer slinging open.

In that case OP try an early production 6-round mag 4513TSW. It will hide in that drawer just fine. Very reliable compact 45.

They are running around $650 for a clean in box example.

I let an avowed Kimber 1911 fan shoot mine Saturday (in exchange for him letting me run a mag through his new SOLO 9mm) He had never seen or heard of the 4513TSW.

He is going to look for one now. As an aside, I was surprised by the Kimber SOLO. The most surprising thing, to me, was that it went through the entire mag without a malfunction. Regards 18DAI
