I ignored these in the past when they came in. Seemed like there were always better choices. Now that 5.56mm prices are dropping, I have a chance to trade an ammo can with 1000rds of GI Green tip on strippers (which via a long series of trades cost me 275 dollars worth of 28-2) for a Hakim, said to be in excellent shape, and perhaps some 8mm Mauser ammo thrown in.

Worth doing? Wideners has 1200 rd cans of Izzy green tip for 400ish.

I see that I can get modified MG something or another 25rd mags for the Hakim off GB.

Whatcha think?

As for purpose... none that I can think of. Other than being short on elephant rifles again, I've half a hundred other guns to fill most niches.

I've never owned or even shot a Hakim, but there is an excellent article on the surplusrifle.com website

Egyptian Hakim

I had one that I bought in the late 80's from an FFL friend of mine. I paid a whopping $39 for the gun and 105 rounds of surplus ammo. That gun seemed to me to weigh about 10 pounds and kicked like a mule. Like you, I saw no real purpose for me having it other than it was 8mm of cheap fun. Sold it for $275 in 2003 when I was short on funds and had the itch for a Super Redhawk.

Still have the Ruger.

I have a Hakim. If you were still around VA. you could come shoot mine. I also have a 1949 F.N. in 8MM Mauser. They are both interesting rifles. If you can get it for around $275.00 it is not a bad deal. Hakims have an interesting muzzle brake. It is very loud and will annoy other people on the firing line.I guess a lot depends on rather you feel you would get more use out of another rifle or practicing with a 1000 rounds of .223. When I got my Hakim there was a lot of cheap 8MM surplus around. Not nearly as cheap any more. However you will probably be able to find more .223. And I am not seeing a lot of Hakims around. When I see one it seems they are asking $400.00 or $500.00.

There are a few things to watch for on the Hakim.

1) The muzzle brake does make them bark REALLY loud.

2) You MUST have the gas adjustment tool.

3) Even with the adjustable gas, a lot of the common surplus ammo is incompatible with this gun and its gas system.

4) It's bloody heavy.

5) They have often been fired using corrosive ammo and not cleaned properly afterwards. This is not necessarily disastrous, as my dark bored FN 49 shows.

6) Read the operating instructions; Hakim thumb makes M1 thumb look like a gentle tap. See the pics on Surplusrifle.

$275 is a good price for a COMPLETE Hakim. Quite a few have missing handguards and cracked stocks.

Be forwarned...if you get a Hakim, you will then have to start looking for a Ljungman.

I will often take my Hakim to the range in case there are riff-raff next to me who are being morons. A few shots out of the Hakim and they usually move down the range a little, or leave all together. :)

That is a good price if it is all there.
