Hi All,

I'm a new member who has appreciated reading your comments regarding s&w's. I own ten, and have have been a s&w fan for a long time. I would like some advice however on my problem gun. I have a 650 .22mag with interchangable .22 cylinder. It functions perfection with .22LR cartridges, but when I use magnums the fired brass gets stuck in the cylinder, and I have to drive the casings out with a long punch and a small mallet. Therefore I seldom shoot magnums. I am considering trying to polish the cylinders with emery cloth, but don't want to make things worse. Anyone else had a similar experience, and if so, how did you correct it? Oh, and one final note, the mag shells slide in and out of the cylinder fine prior to shooting.

Thanks in advance for any words of advice.

Call S&W and tell them your problem, they will have you ship the cylinder to them and they will fix it for you. Its worth the call.

My old HI-Standard 9 shot .22 revo does exactly the same thing. When I shot mini-mags, I would have to whack on the end of the ejector to get the brass out, standard ammo not so much. I believe it will improve if the tubes are polished because it would reduce friction.

Whatever you, don't just attach the chambers using emery cloth. IT is too coarse, and will enlarge your chambers, giving additional problems.

The correct course of action would be to make a chamber-sized brass mandrel, slot it, and use a single wrap of 600 grit wet-or-dry abrasive paper to polish it out. You want to be especially careful to NOT enlarge the forward end of the chambers or your hard extraction will become worse.

If you are nervous about doing this yourself, sending the cylinder to S&W or having an experienced gunsmith do it is more sensible.

I thank both John and Bounty Hunter. I'll send the gun back to S&W. I really like this gun for camping and high country fishing trips, and would hate to mess it up beyond repair. btw, I have never seen a spec sheet for this gun with interchangeable cylinder. I bought it new in the box, at Ambler Arms in Milpitas, CA about 20 years ago, but have never seen a model 650 .22/.22 mag anywhere since. I guess it was a short run that never got a lot of marketing.

Thanks again for your advice.
