May be a dead horse to some, but ...

My rifle would shoot anything, flawlessly. Maybe 2000 rounds with minimal cleaning. Then I started getting a lot of failure to fire issues (hammer was not cocking). So I cleaned and looked and looked and cleaned, but no joy.

So today I looked closer at the ejector. I decided its hook was rubbing on the "center rail" of the bolt. So I bent it outward a hair. Much better - not perfect.

Still had some issues on the last round or two. So I see that the ejector is being pushed up by the magazine lips, which forced it back into the bolt, again. So I bent it up just a hair.

I think I got it now! Shot a handful off the front porch, and the bolt cycled just fine, and every round went BANG. Ejection pattern is fine, and I see no evidence of the ejector touching the bolt or the magazine lips.

So how did it get bent anyway?? My daughter was visiting recently, and I was showing her how to take down the rifle for cleaning. Comparing to an AR15. She goes to boot camp shortly, wanted her to have a heads-up. I musta jammed the extractor somehow/somewhere in that demonstration.

I will let y'all know if anything goes awry. :)

It's easy to bend the ejector when cleaning, if you don't pay attention, especially with a BoreSnake.

Many folks slip a piece of aquarium tubing over it to keep from snagging it.

Thanks for the info. Have plenty of aquarium tubing laying around (that happens when you buy 500 feet at a time) and it works perfectly. No more worrying about catching my Otis on it anymore :D

i really need to get a piece of tubing for cleaning. people have used straws too right?

usually i just stick with holding the back end away from it as i draw it through. its a bit of a dance but its worked. then again, knowing the way life works its only a matter of time before i screw it up.
