In the pre apocalyptic times before Y2K. There was a downturn in the economy in the early 90's. A Korean War vet owned a small strip center of about 6 shops on a main street in a early 1950's neighborhood. A used car parts and used furniture store closed down a left him with side-by-side vacancies. So, he removed the partition installed good lighting and opened "Eleana's Hardware Store." He had all the normal nuts N bolts, plumbing and electrical a 1950's neighborhood would use to keep their homes in working order. He wasn't part of any chain. Just two old veterans with time on their hand and a place to spend that time.
I stopped in and looked around but it was out of my way and the stock was for 1950's housing, not the 1970/80's apartments I worked on. I Ask how Eleana was, and got a big belly laugh! It turns out Eleana was a 6-year-old Philippina orphan that the old guys supported through an organized charity.
The store stayed in business for about 6 years. It was impossible to be competitive with the big box stores! In 6 years enough money was earned to pay for Elana's schooling and care. Also enough money was made to found a "Nursing School" in the jungle to educate Eleana and so far 22 other nurses that go village to village giving free health care!
Just two old guys that wanted to make a difference and did!
I thought I's share a story about the good going on in the world. Merry Christmas!
