I would be interested in experiences and opinions and pros and cons of the RCBS Chargemaster and the Lyman 1200 DPS electronic scale/powder measures.

The RCBS Chargemaster is composed of a separate scale and powder dispenser, while the Lyman 1200 is one contained unit.

Lyman has been periodically upgrading their system, and the latest upgrade has eliminated the buttons and is now using an electronic touch pad.

Is either of these systems preferred over the other, etc?

Never tried the Lyman but I really like my RCBS. When I first got it I would weigh every few loads on a regular scale to see if it was changing load as it was used and never found any changes at all.

All in all I like it.

check the into the manufacturer's warranties on both

and

search here for posts regarding RCBS and Lyman and how their service departments treat customers

my personal experience with a Lyman 1500 XP that I bought was lousy - I really liked its design with the trickler - but when I tested it with check weights - it wasn't accurate nor consistent and when I sent it back to Lyman - they shipped it back to me and said it was fine

I don't trust it - and to me - an accurate powder scale is the most important piece of equipment to a reloader

personally, I prefer and use an Ohaus 1010 scale and a Redding 10x Powder measure

Have two friends that use the RCBS and like it. I personally am still a Dinosaur and still use my old trusty RCBS 1010 scale. Even though I do not own an electronic one, I can personally give you the thumbs up on RCBS - great customer service!

I bought the Hornady Autocharge and am another one that would check it against my RCBS 505 every tenth charge. A full year later of that and it has never been off. The price on them has gone up since I bought it but if mine ever does go kaput then I would eventually buy another. I avoided the Chargemaster and the Lyman since the RCBS version was a lot more money and I won't deal with Lyman's horrid customer service people.

I just see no practical use for any of them. A good manual balance beam scale will last forever and has a lifetime warranty should you ever need it. Electronics 1 year.

Electronics are computers, they WILL fail at some time. They are very expensive and slow. If you are only loading a few bench rest rounds then maybe they serve a purpose.

If I bought one it would be RCBS just because they are a good company.

I have no use for even a regular electronic scale, I have an expensive one and used it twice.

JMHO

only have one; it is a Ohaus 505, beam balance type and never fails and remains accurate. Who needs anything more? Purchased: late 1960

Have a simple, early release to the electronics....RCBS. It's still working fine.

FAR faster when weighing random weights than ANY beam scale.

I still use my RCBS 1010 balance beam scale. I know it is accurate, and after seeing a few of the others in operation I don't trust them enough for My loads. My rifle loads are all weighed individually, and the pressures these loads are working at, I want the best accuracy I can get.

Even those no BS manufacturers like Dillon & RCBS provide only 1 year warranty on electronic equipment. I've read good and bad about RCBS chargemaster (that would be my choice if I decided to go that route). The good - it works as advertised, trickle pretty fast. The bad part - keyboard breaks in a year or two so it renders unit unusable... All of those (consumer grade) devices are susceptible to interference from other electronics in your house.
