I have been shooting with a club of officers for many years. While they call it a combat match……it falls more into Bullseye as we shoot for points on B27 targets for trophies, bragging rights and a belt buckle at the end of the year. We use both revolver and semi auto.

I have managed to work my way to the top class and if you get a "POSSIBLE" you get a buckle for shooting a 500.

my semi auto skills have always fell short to my revolver, however this year….I seem to be about even (so far….probably jinxed myself)

I have also been shooting a competition grade Springfield 9mm and recently came the closest ever to shooting the elusive 500. I shot a 498 and if I would have been shooting a .45 acp, I would have been in for a 500 buckle.

This got me to thinking…..should I just switch back to 45?
finish out the season with my 9mil since I am used to this 1911 for now?

I used to do really well with 200 LSWC and 3.6 - 3.8 of VV N310 or 4.2 of VV N320 or 4.3 of WST or 3.5 of BE, but would have to learn/master a different breaking trigger…as that was a few years ago when I switched to 9 mil just to save a few pennies with reloads.

Its also funny too that my 9mil is a adjustable rear sight but if I feel the range conditions are causing to shoot differently and a sight adjustment is required….I don't screw on the rear sight…..I just adjust my hold. Maybe I got used to that when I first started out and its just comfortable. to get the above group….I aimed at 11 O'Clock on the 10 ring as I could see my shots going right and down at 15 yds. 18 of those shots are from the 25 yard line (point shoulder).

So, I guess my question…..is it a good idea to change guns/calibers mid season?

My current 9mil load is 115 Penn LSWC being pushed by an old can of WSL using 4.0 at 1.092" which is about 1000 FPS. While the load is accurate out of my 5" Nowlin barreled Springer…..I don't like the leading is causing in my barrel. I scrub my barrel to remove the many slivers of lead.

hardly any load data with 9mil using WSL since its old (no longer made) and my window of powder weight is very short. I may back off a .10 which would put me at the published starting load.

so if you were me…..stay with what I started or switch mid season and hope for an effortless transition?

For some reason I always shot higher scores with the 45 acp .
Used an AMT Hardballer fitted with an arched mainspring housing.
I think the extra bullet diameter was the real help, those extra wide holes would touch a ring when the 38 wouldn't.
Give it a try, just might help.

Either 9mm or .45, I'm not messin' with you. I wouldn't change in the middle of the season, though. You'll have time to get used to a new set up in the off season.

I pulled both guns out and was dry firing them...pick one, press....pick up the other and press. While both have a nice break....they are different.

I will finish with the Nina and break out the 45 for 2016.

Sounds like the "Old PPC" game?
