Engraved Double Action Smith's

I've posted this before. Apologies for the repetition. This is an
German engraved Victory Model, presented to an outgoing Commander of a US Army unit in Germany.

Great guns guys! I have a few requests, if I may.

Bill - can you post pics and a brief synopsis of the JFK/Presidential engraved model 19 / combat magnum?

Richard - how about some pics of the Rentzschke 357 you have - I remember how detailed and intricate the engraving is. The craftsmanship is amazing....

Combat Magnum, K260003, the first one of this model completed on December 15, 1955. Kept in the factory collection and in 61 shipped to Alvin White for engraving and gold inlay. The shipping log indicates "present to JFK". There is a gold shield on the bottom of the trigger guard with the initials JFK engraved on it. The ivory stocks were also made by Mr. White and feature gold S&W monograms, escutcheon, and stock screw. Click on the photos for a better look.

Here you go...

Rentzschke engraved 357 Pinto shipped to Houston, TX in 1959. This is a non-model marked 4-screw 357 - the only one that I have seen (perhaps it just missed the model stamping process...). This revolver at one time or another has been in collections of some notable collectors, several of whom regularly frequent this forum. It is one of my favorite engraved guns - I love the detailed scroll work, that is much more impressive when you have it in your hands and I am pleased to have wrangled it into my stable of engraved pintos.

Morgan:

The photos of that gun are wonderful to see, but they bring back painful memories of a few years ago, when I came in 2nd place when bidding on that beauty. I am however, glad to know that it ended up in your collection. Did you ever letter the gun? I always thought that with the N50000 SN that it might have been shipped, set aside to be shipped to, or engraved for someone of note. The small roll mark on the left side was also an indication that it was a special gun destined for someone/something special. I love the engraving (along with the addition of the beautiful ivories:cool:) and would love for you to post some more photos of the rest of the engraved areas when you get a chance. BTW- nice job with the light box.:) I eagerly look forward to photos of more of your collection.

Thanks for sharing,

I'll try to get a few more photos in a few days. I've never lettered the gun, but as I understand it will letter as a 27-2, not a 29-2. I'm sure there are two with the same serial number, and I agree that the small roll mark and serial are interesting. Thanks for the compliments on it!

In response to RKMesa's post:

That's incredible work -- really makes you go "Wow" ... I wonder what Claus Willig charges for something like that and how do you get him contracted if he's living in Germany? Unbelievable work ... AUSGEZEICHNET as they say over there ...

Oak Leaves and Acorns...

Bill:

I think that that is the 1st time I have seen that oak leaf beauty. I have to ask - does it have another side you might share with us?;)

As always - Thanks for sharing.

Bill - Thanks for posting the JFK model 19! IIRC, it was never delivered, right? That gun is amazing. Can you post your Alvin White engraved 44 magnum which has service stocks because the engraving on the frame was done for service stocks? I remember it having a beautiful animal motif.

Richard - thank you for showing that Rentzschke 357 - does it get much more ornate, wow! Your engraved collection is great - in fact, the only gun I think you are missing is a class A engraved combat magnum by LeBlanc :p

Morgan - very nice 29-2, N50000. That one is different in many ways than the other guns of this thread. I like it a lot :)

All - I never heard of Dan Cullity - can anyone tell me about him?

Repost of one I showed before:

Model 57 S237459. Engraved and inlaid by John Pease for the S&WCA 2014 Symposium and the 50th anniversary of the 41 Magnum. Also included are photos of Mr. Pease's original drawing, Bill Cross' letter and a framed print that the engraving was based upon (Alaskan Autumn by Charles Fracé)

This is some factory work undoubtedly done by Harry Jarvis. The revolver was shipped on May 1, 1953 to the Smith & Wesson Sales Department,Advertising Account. It was shipped with an 8 3/8" barrel, target hammer,Class A engraved, blue finish, and smooth rosewood presentation grips. There is no information available about how this revolver was used by the Sales Dept. or if it was a gift for a special person.
It's a 357 Magnum by the way.
Bill

Bill

Beautiful work and I would agree that it was done by Jarvis. I love your cases - where do you get them done?

I have been on the hunt for a long-tube factory engraved early post war 357, but alas, I have been unsuccessful in adding one to my stable.:( So, if you ever tire of that beauty, let me know.:)

Thanks for sharing,
