Took my camera with me on the tractor while doing some bush hogging around the fence rows and got a few wildlife pictures I thought worth sharing. Living in the Arkansas Ozarks and seeing the abundance of wildlife never gets old for me.

I had a roadrunner dart out across in front of me then duck under the barbed wire fence into the next field. Once through the fence he just stood by pretty close and watched me drive by on the tractor.

I noticed several Mississippi kites circling overhead once I started cutting brush and captured this picture as one flew overhead. They feed mostly of insects which they capture in flight like dragonflies, but also eat cicada, grasshoppers, and other crop-damaging insects which makes them handy to have around.

I had to be quick on the draw with the camera to catch this pair as they trotted off down an old path that led back into some timber in between a two pastures.

A little later I spotted another momma doe with a set of twins. They never seemed to get too excited as I eased along on the tractor and actually let me get up pretty close to them as momma trotted off.

There is a spot on the back side of the pasture I was cutting in that I suspect at one time was an old home place. There's no evidence of a building any longer, but there are two big pecan trees and several large crepe myrtle trees that cause me to suspect a home once stood here. I pulled up under the shade of one of the big pecan trees and shut off the tractor to get a drink of cool water and noticed several hummingbirds were working over the crepe myrtle trees. I pulled out the camera hoping to get a shot and one eventually landed close enough for a picture.

Very nice photos! We have roadrunners up here in North Texas. They are very fast on the ground, they can get on down the trail. Saw one the other day that had something in his mouth. To far away to tell what it was but it was wiggling and squirming like it really wanted to be somewhere else. I didn't get to see the outcome but I think the roadrunner had himself a nice snack.

Great pictures!
A Mississippi Kite followed me for about 15 minutes yesterday while I was mowing down some pretty high weeds in a 30 acre field. I shot a picture or two with my iPhone. Was very entertaining to watch them taking the insects out of mid-air. Pictures not nearly as good as yours, though.
There are a couple of fawns trapped in one of my pastures. I guess they jumped the fence to get in, but can't jump it to get out. I don't think they were born in the field. They are old enough to browse, have access to water, and I suspect the mama might be jumping the fence for them to nurse. Have been seeing them for about three weeks, now.
I got up a fair size covey of quail a few days ago, probably at least a dozen birds. They were pretty good sized birds, so I figure it must be two or three successful early hatches that have "coveyed-up."

Very nice photos! There's a lot to be said for doing tractor work, you can solve a lot of problems going around in circles cutting grass or hay. I'm looking to do a little tractor work myself as a sideline whenever I retire. a lot of people buy a tractor to help do work, I'll look for work just to be able to ride the tractor! collecting and working on them can be as addictive as our S&Ws!

Faulkner, your wonderful photo's bring back some very fond memories.
That's probably the thing I miss most about moving into the city. When I had my rural property, I would bushhog the back field a couple times a season and I always loved to see what critters were going to show up. Flights of swallows and purple martins were constant companions once I got the insects stirred up. For a couple years I had twin kits that would show up after I had about half the field cut and they would start hunting the edges for mice and voles. It was so cool to watch them spot something moving, watch them slowly start their stalk and then watch them pounce under the piles of tall grass and then watch them tussle over the catch. Also had several redtailed hawks that would make an appearance to either pounce or snatch rodents on the fly. In the fall and winter I had 2 home made corn feeders out and a salt lick. At one time we counted 27 deer in the back field, with a large buck claiming one feeder and all the other deer either having to crowd their way into the other feeder or they would sneek around and grab a mouthful of corn while the buck was chasing someone else away from "his" feeder.

This brought back a fond memory of me easing into the woods one frosty morning long ago. I had my old bow and was just creeping along, when a covey of Bobwhite quail flushed right in front of me. I just about died on the spot, I was so surprised.

Thanks for the photo and jogging my memory.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Faulkner you are a marvel. I'm sure you can be a badass trooper when the occasion calls but you have an artistic side that suggests a contented soul. Renaissance man might be an appropriate description. Anyway, enough of the brown nosing but I do consider you one of my best friends I've never met. :)

It's always a pleasure to see your posts, thanks for taking the time and trouble.
Bad photo taken through the back door of a Cooper's hawk on our feeders yesterday morning. It chased a bird into that same door last week.
The anti-squirrel baffle actually worked for several months and still keeps the lesser squirrels off the feeders, not so much the bold ones. I wish I could train the hawk to hunt squirrels.

I've never been one to take pictures but I enjoy your pictures and I do like to bush hog. Larry
