New B here. Used to be in Law Enforcement. Curtailed quite a few years ago (saw too many bad things and decided at an early age I wasn't meant for the street line of work, takes a very special person for that job).

Anyway, I carried a Ruger Security Six stainless, but always lusted after an Smith.

Fast forward. Life has been good, I have a good job and professional career, so for my 50th I bought a very nice 686 from a retired police officer I have known and respected for years (he also the father of a friend of mine who happens to be the sheriff, so no I didn't get TOO far away ).

It is a S&W 686-3 stainless. Had been shot one time to qualify. I know the history of this gun quite well. Can anyone give any idea on general DOM?

Also working with a 686-2, same question on DOM?

SO far, this gun is scary accurate. I am a better than average shot with long guns, but this pistol, makes me look GOOD!!!! It is way above what I could do with my Ruger Sec. Six.

Thanks for any help.

You'll need to post a serial number for a manufacture date. If you go to a local book store, look for the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (SCSW). You'll have many enjoyable hours reading this book and drooling over the pictures. I had Santa-wife get me one a couple of years ago.

I have a 686-4 in 4" and agree they are super, excellent guns. I just love my Security, Service and Speed Six's but there's no doubting the qualities of a 686. This surely must be one of the best Smiths ever produced. Mine too was bought from a Sheriff's Deputy friend.

Welcome to the Forum. I own a 686+ 6", which is one of the most accurate revolvers in my collection, so I'm not surprised to hear that your 686 is "scary accurate". I hope you get many great years of shooting with that handgun - it's very strong and will digest just about any .357 ammunition you can feed it. Have at it!

May the wind be always at your back, and the road rise up to meet you...
