Everybody has one, why not show them?...J-Frames

I had wanted to post a couple of J frames here but, after purchasing the 649 I decided to wait until she was out of waiting jail - here are my total of three J frames.

... but, Jim, it's a 'J' frame.

Don,
More valuable and rarer than the J frame which wasn't introduced until Oct. 1960 as the Model 35-1 and Kit Gun as 34-1. The I Models of 1953 New I frame .32s & .38 S&Ws became J frames with a -1 in 1961.

This is the most confusing issue of the 1950s I frames. You have a Model of 1953 22/32 Kit Gun 'New' I frame. Yes, it has the egg shaped trigger guard and 1/8" longer grip frame (takes J size grips), but still has the I size short window main frame w/short cylinder.

This is a comparison of a 22/32 Kit Gun 'New' I-Frame Model of 1953 (bottom), and a modern "J-Frame" Model 63 Kit Gun (top). Note the differences in frame length in front of the trigger guard and the cylinder length.

This shows the common main frame size of a pre-war 'original' I-Frame 22/32 Kit Gun (top)and a 22/32 Kit Gun 'New' I-Frame Model of 1953 (bottom). Same size main frame window and cylinder.

...The difference is very subtle and difficult to see unless you have one to compare with the other. Your pictures provide the information perfectly. I'll be on the lookout from now-on.
Again, thank you for the education.

Don,

You bet, always happy to discuss the interesting I frames.

649-1

Picked up this circa '88 dash one as a police trade in from one of the Carolinas (can't remember which dept.) from a dealer that had over a dozen of them, he let me go through the lot and I chose this one, cost me a hundred thirty bucks in '94.....cleaned up the dings, gave it a polish, put on some rubber boot grips and it resided on my ankle or in my pocket for the next fifteen years....I changed the latch to the newer style years ago, just like the way it looks.....still love shooting it, love it so much I bought a new dash two shortly after I bought this, and have never bothered to shoot it....grips were a recent change since it's now retired from everyday carry....

J frames

Only a couple I carry the 642 with CT grips and the M&P 340 with CT grips. The rest just kind of lay around in the box waiting to be taken out.

37-2, 640 Big Dot, 642 Gemini Customs, 642 Power Port night sight, 940

Got more but I reached my 5 upload files.
