Experience with using Aguila .22LR ammo?

I've found the Super Extra SV & HV to be a definite step up from the usual suspects at Walmart.

It's good stuff. I'm finding it around $.10-ish a round delivered.

I tried the Aguila Super Extra in a SR22 and it doesn't feed reliably. It goes bang when it does feed. Winchester X22LR feeds good in the SR22. I'll shoot the Aguila in a revolver. Larry

I shoot short sub sonics in my 34 snub. I do this in my closed garage with no complaints from the neighbors. Can hit the sticky note most of the time. I use a 1/8 alumnium 4x4 back stop against my roll around tool chest. The back house wall is brick so no chance of the round getting outa my garage..

Good ammo. Just don't get caught with it in the country where its made. I have somewhat of an attitude about that.

Picking up some Aguila from Academy Sports today.. will probably shoot it tomorrow or Thursday.

Cheaper than the CCI and Federal Match Gold Medal I just shot yesterday. Yeah, I'm a penny=pinching ba***rd.

But if it goes downrange fubbing up the works consistently, I'll be ahead of where I am with the Remington's I've been shooting.

Thanks for all the comments and recommendations.

I have shot some of it, and find that it's no worse than most of the junk .22 we get these days. The only advantage to me was that it was cheaper, and apparently that's no longer the case. I can find CCI for the same money, so,that's what I do now.

Can't speak to current production but 10 years ago, Aguila Subsonic ( in the Purple box) was one of the most used ammo in our regional Gallery (bullseye) league. It was reported to be made in Mexico on Eley equipment and using Eley primers back then. Irregardless , as long as your gun would run it, it was by far the best bang for your buck in target grade ammo. It was somewhat funny actually, as you'd see lines of top ranked shooters running $1500 European target pistols with (then) $13 /brick ammo. I remember placing one order for 30,000 rounds of the stuff. It was that good.
I don't shoot competitively anymore but still hoard treasured bricks of the stuff to feed my Pardini SP.

All that said, the two gripes many had was:
1) Aguila (all flavors) had a waxy coating that would gum up your action quicker if not wiped off prior to mag loading.
2) The subsonic in particular had the best reputation for accuracy but , due to its lower power, would not run reliably in some of the US made Ruger and S&W target pistols without mods..

Well, I shot 100 rounds each of Aguila Super Extra Standard and High Velocity today at an indoor range. Worked like a charm when I did what I was supposed to.

I think I'll be shooting more of this as they're the least expensive rounds I can buy locally and seem to always be in stock at one Academy Sports store or another.

Thanks for all your comments on the Aguila's.

i just ordered a case of aguila sv.
i couldn't resist because it was the same price as i pay for federal bulk.
in my opinion, it's a step up from bulk.
not for serious work tho.
i'm working on point shooting at under 10 yards, n it's as good as anything else at that range.

Looking for stories/experiences with using Aguila .22LR ammo especially with M&P .22LR full sized pistol... anyone?

I finally tried some Aguila SuperExtra copper plated in my M&P22 at the range yesterday. I had no malfunctions out of 50 rounds fired. It seems to work as well as the CCI MiniMags, which I like a lot.

I can tell you though, that my pistol does NOT like Federal AutoMatch or Federal Champion. Lots of malfunctions with that stuff. I'll have to save the Federal for use with my Ruger 10/22.

Well, I've now shot 400 rounds of Aguila. My M&P 22LR seems to like Super Extra Standard Velocity AND High Velocity just fine. Only 1 stovepipe (first round after a magazine change), no other issues.

It just amazes me the amount of times this subject has come up --- not Aguila in particular, but "what ammo will Brand X handgun shoot without problems?" Aguila seems to be fairly consistently mentioned as "being shootable" for most people but then someone (like me with Remington ammo) has an issue... It'ss ALL OVER THE 'NET.. post after post, thread after thread (now you tell me!?!? that I have since found since my initial post).

I was an ignorant dumba** and didn't know it was a "generic Truth" that 22LR pistols and ammo are a world of their own and some pistol and ammo combinations just don't go together. I shoulda just searched the Net more and tested on my own. I also shouldn't have assumed that cheap/inexpensive Aguila ammo was garbage or that more expensive was more "shootable".

So, I guess I'm now out of my own thread.

Thanks for the responses.

I haven't used any Aguila in several years, but shot a good bit of it in rifles and handguns at one time. As I recall, it seems standard velocity was the most accurate; I think it had an unplated bullet.

As with other ammos, particularly non-match grade, accuracy can vary noticeably from lot-to-lot. CCI standard velocity may be the most consistent of these, but Aguila is probably not too far behind.

I experienced several cartridges that would not fire in the last batch of Aguila standard velocity I bought. Never had this happen previously or heard other such complaints, so I'll assume the problem was restricted to that lot. For the money, Aguila may still be a good buy.

Its runs good through everything here.......But....It won't feed through my 50 rd. Blackdog magazine.....I even use it in my 41.....They do have an unpleasant aroma after firing.

The "unpleasant aroma" is the Eley Priming that Aguila uses (=GOOD).
I have used the cr@p out of Aguila and the ammo is good solid ammo. Now, whether or not any particular .22LR weapon "LIKES" any particular .22LR brand or individual round within that brand is a whole different story LOL.

I've used it in S&W revolvers, no issues.
Also in my Beretta Neos, Hammerli and the S&W M&P15-22P (pistol) with no issues. The S&W owner's manual says to use only high speed stuff, and I have had no issues with any such ammo, including a lot of Aguila.
EXCEPT, my Walther P22. It hardly likes anything, and I had F2F, F2E and F2Eject with almost anything that wasn't hi-velocity.

Aguila Velocities

I shoot a good bit of Aguila .22lr, particularly if I want to keep my CCIs back for a rainy day. It's clean and reliable ammo, and from what I've read it comes from a clean factory. Since they do not print velocities on their boxes and packaging of .22, here goes:

Super Extra HV Copper Plated RN (40gr)................1255 fps
Super Extra SV Lead Solid Point (40gr).................1130 fps
Subsonic Lead Solid Point (40gr)...........................1025 fps
Super Extra .22 Short Copper Plated RN (29gr)........1095 fps
Target Competition SV Lead Solid Point (40gr).........1080 fps
Pistol Match Competition SV Lead Solid Point (40gr)...925 fps
Rifle Match Competition SV Lead Solid Point (40gr)...1080 fps

Besides a handful of specialty rounds (hypervelocity, primer powered peashooter rounds, etc.) Aguila has a 38gr HV copper plated hollow point but the velocity is unknown to me.
