extractor collar

Can anyone tell me if a .32 long S&W HE regulation police (pre War) 31/4" barrel manufactured between 1917-1942 requires an extractor collar. The gun did not come with one and I am having a problem closing the cylinder. I corrected the yoke/crane alignment problem and the extractor rod is not bent. However, the center pin is slightly bent but it will engage the cylinder without the extractor rod. The schemetic shows collars for all of the series but I cannot ascertain if this particular model requires a collar. The spring seems to collapse and the cylinder is pushing against the forcint cone. Any help would be appreciated.
