My 9mm Shield EZ does not rack after each round fired as it only comes back but must be pushed forward with my thumb after each round. Is this a problem or common after years of use? The weapon was deep cleaned and the problem persists

After several thousand rounds my EZ is still functioning perfectly.

If the gun doesn't come back into battery after a round is fired, you definitely have a problem. The first thing I'd do is give he gun a thorough cleaning, especially making sure there's no grit on the sliding surfaces that slows down the slide. If it still stays out of battery, send it back to Smith and have them fix it. I'd try and take some video of the gun not returning to battery when shooting, and send that to Smith.

how does it feel just racking the empty gun with and empty mag or no mag?
Did you buy the gun new or used? How many rounds have you fired through the gun? Has the gun been lubricated after the “deep cleaning”? What do you mean by that term?
As mentioned above- weak ammo, recoil spring issue (broken coil or weak spring), lack of proper lubrication or all of the mentioned items. JMO

Did the trouble only begin after the thorough cleaning...was it cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner? Those can take off every bit of lube; make sure the gun was properly lubed before reassembly.

Is the slide lock performing as it should? Both my 9 and 380 had broken springs on the lock that caused that. Strange that both had broken about a month apart from each other. It's an easy fix and S&W will send you a new one upon request.

Recoil spring assembly. Order a new one or exercise your S&W warranty.

Call S&W and end it in to figure it out. Unless you modified it they'll fix it for free.
Iceman77 — First off, DO ONLY load rounds from a seated mag. No drop ins followed by dropping the slide. Secondly, my 9EZ nearly always ‘halts’ on loading from the mag, a round being loaded snagging its case head on the next round in the mag. (Many folks are unaware the 9mm Luger case is NOT straight walled like a .45ACP — if you’ll lay a 9mm on a piece of glass you’ll notice the case head stands a bit proud of the case side a bit.) What I was experiencing was that the case head being loaded was snagging on the miniscule upstanding portion of the following case in the mag — sometimes until I’d ‘pop’ the slide with my off hand, and sometimes only momentarily.
But, for the infamous Round #1, first off, do not *****-foot about racking the slide. Grab it firmly, yank it back, and let ‘er go — slingshotting it, if you will. That will allow slide momentum to assist the loading. I hope that will solve your problem, but if not… Next, dismount the pistol, and thoroughly clean the slide spring and rod as best you can! Lots of range use and rounds fired will smooth out the parts involved, and help insure it hey work well.
In my case, stepping up to more “energetic loads” solved the problems fore Rounds 2 and following. As a hand-loader, that was the easiest to solve.
One last item relates ALL rounds: on the top of the slide, right behind the ejection port, on the top, you’ll find the “loaded chamber indicator”. With the slide locked back, examine the tiny piece of metal that hangs over the back of the ejection port, and make sure that indicator has not been “hammered” back into solid contact with the ejection chamber. If it has, and it sounds from your description of the problem that it might be, then it will need to be addressed. It isn’t terribly complicated, but it does need some finesse. If you feel comfortable, there are Internet files that will guide you through the process of removing the indicator (a little finesse required here!), adjusting its shape, and then returning it to its home spot on the slide. If you don’t feel comfortable, it should be an easy fix for your local gunsmith.
Hope I’ve not wearied you, but this seems to be a more-than-one-user problem, and solution set! Go ahead, ask me how I know.

Make sure one of your thumbs is not riding against the slide while gripping the pistol as you shoot. Any pressure against the slide could prevent the slide from returning fully into battery. The EZ is designed for easy racking by hand so has a lighter than normal (compared to other Shield models) recoil spring.
If you just bought it and still have problems call S&W. If you attempt any "do it yourself" fixes beyond a thorough clean and lube you could void your warranty.

I just ran a few hundred brass and aluminum cased blazers thru my EZ no problems at all. Shooting done during a local club practical pistol style match, Have you had anyone else try the gun. Just in case as MTC(ss)ret said you are doing something subconscoustly to affect operation. MY son was having issues with a new gun, I picked it up and it ran great, Turned out he was limp wristing the 1911 due to a painful forearm from a fall days prior.
