Factory finish? Model 10-8 with 3" barrel, RB, matte blue...

Nobody can tell me about this finish...

I am now in possession of said gun.. It's funny I was looking for a thread like this before I bought it but I didn't realize this was here until today.... Here is a comparison Picture next to a factory finished 19-7 K comp. absolutely gorgeous. My FFL (and everyone else in my LGS) really, REALLY like this finish, but none of them were sure if it was after market either. The biggest difference I see from that and the dark matte finish on my 19-7 is that the barrel will shine up well on the 19-7. I can't get much shine out of whatever finish is on the 10-8. Just looking at the frame of the gun though, I can't see a difference. I'll have to inquire more from S&W as soon as I can and let everybody know what they tell can tell me. P.S. The Matte finish and the Product code that was driving me MAD were the key selling points of this gun for me.

Well, glad to find out where it landed. Sort of bummed that it wasn't in my safe....but glad it is here with a forum member. Nice and unusual revolver.

Similarities

A pic of the one in the above referenced thread.......

One thing I've noticed about this mystery gun (in relation to the gun pictured here) They seem to have slight wear in the same places (I.E Light scratches on Ejector Rod, AND slight reddish discoloration where the cylinder rotates out) Not sure if it means much. Mine is obviously a darker finish than this, but still very similar.

The reason the markings are the same is that your gun is the one I show in the picture above (all posts about your gun are referring to the exact same gun). As part of my downsizing efforts, it was auctioned by Lee (handejector) last year. Somewhere along the line, whoever bought it has turned it again. Too bad, it is a very scarce gun.

Question - in your post above you mention that it will not shine up - I have to ask how you are trying to shine it? Your pic above shows a tube of Flitz, I certainly hope you are not taking Flitz to the blue finish.... IMO It would be a bummer to modify that finish due to the scarceness. Truth is, I never lettered it, but I have total confidence that it is a factory finish and totally legit due to the previous owner, I purchased it out of his estate after he passed away.

I hope you sold that model 10 with the underlug that I've lusted after for so many moons, so I can let it go. I may not remember my name, but I never forget a gun. :)

Yes, it's gone, unfortunately. I miss them all, but that one was very cool and special.

Here's a pic to torment you further.. :) :D

The Australian Victoria State police model 10's were 4" barreled variants as were the models used by New South Wales....

The finish is fine. I just needed a quick way to compare it to the 19-7 finish which DOES shine... anyway. How would you recommend keeping the gun clean / stored properly?

As far as cleaning, maybe wipe down gently with a microfiber cloth sprayed with CLP (BreakFree) or something similar. That's it. Would wipe it and then hit it with a dryer part of the rag so as not to leave it wet.

**I have to say, I cringed a bit when it read like you were trying to polish the gun.

haha. I understand now. Thanks for the advice though. I mean the irregular finish is why I bought it. Plan to keep it for a long long time.
