I have a 27-2 3 1/2" that I would like to get reblued. I NEVER refinish revolvers, or any gun for that matter, but I would really like this one done. It has a bit of wear on the left side of the barrel that continues to drive me insane. I know it will ruin any collectability but its one of the last guns I would ever sell and my kids probably never would either. Has anyone ever had a 27 refinished by S&W and how would todays finish compare to the finish of yesteryears? And does anyone have a clue how far behind they are on their online orders? I ordered a rear sight blade kit two weeks ago and have yet to see it. Any help appreciated.

I don't know about the blueing, but I sent my model 29-3 back to S&W in August for repair. I just got my repair estimate back from them last week. in Sept they told me that it would be 16 weeks before they even would be able to look at it. They are just swamped.

Better settle in for a wait.

It's my impression that the pro shop work is independent of the store, which is probably a good thing, since the store delays are becoming epic. On August 1st I placed an order with the store for some items -- and am still waiting. Normal stuff, too -- grips, a box, some accessories. On the other hand, at least one similar item I ordered in October was delivered within two weeks, so it's more like chaos than a uniform delay.

My info on the gunsmithing shop would all be second hand, so I'll defer to those who have dealt with the gunsmiths directly recently. FWIW I've heard both of people who were waiting months, and people who had their guns (usually warranty work) returned within a week.

Replacement parts

Regarding the length of time to get parts...
I ordered a replacement rod for my 27-2
I ordered it by phone. The person I spoke with said it would take 4 to 6 weeks. It took almost 6 weeks. But the good part was they did not charge me.

I had this 19 refinished by the factory about three years ago. This was an old police gun that was beat beyond all description. The photo does not do it justice. It looks like it just came out of the box for the first time. The stampings are crisp and the only way you can tell this gun was refinished is that there is some pitting on the barrel that could not be polished out. Unless your 27 has some really unusual provenance I wouldn't hesitate to send it back to the factory to be refinished. Just make sure you post some before and after photos!

This question gets asked...a lot. Might want to run a search for mucho edifying reading.

Consensus is that S&W remains top notch for refinishing, and if you get the high polish blue, it will look like the guns of old.

They're quoting nine months right now just to have a look at non-warranty work.

You're lucky! I have a 29-2 that's been there since May awaiting an estimate.
When I called CS, they confirmed they had it and stated that it will be 9+ months before its even looked at.

Did you choose the high bright polish blue or the standard polish and blue?

I considered Fords but I guess in my mind it makes it easier to deal with the factory refinishing it rather than someone else. I know it makes no difference really. And thats a nice 19! Im confident that its impossible to beat a 19 or 66 2.5" RB. Thanks for all your replies guys and ill make up my mind soon hopefully. Either way ill get some pics on here.

I had a 25-5 re-finished there about 4 or so years ago. It came back after a couple months looking much better than new ever did. They can't do the same black bluing that we all love so much from guns made in the 60's and on back, but the bluing system they use turns out deep and NICE!.

It's a bit hard to get the full affect because I have Birchwood Casey's Sheath on it here, but you get an idea anyway-

Sent my 2" M 10-7 to the Factory in mid June for a hammer bob, DAO and carry action job. It was like new in box when I bought it so no refinishing was needed. Just got the work estimate yesterday in the mail. Called them this morning and made payment. Rep said several weeks for completion. I'll keep all filled in.

I sent a model 17 off on April 24 and got the estimate on Oct 23, called the next day and paid. Still waiting on that nice reblue

I don't remember if I requested anything special. I think it is just the standard blue. I don't remember having an option.

I think that the refinish is a little blacker than the original from that time period. It wasn't all that expensive either especially when you compare it to Ford's.
