Failed Modification on Uncle Mike's Grip

Today I felt that the grip on my 637 was printing too much to my like, and decided to do some needed modification on it. Turned out there is steel in them. Very well made grips. lol

Now I need to shave off the metal, and round the edges.

The gun and the tool used for the fix.

EDITED: Yesterday I finally had the time to work on the grip and fix it. Took me an hour with a metal saw, didn't expect them to be that tough. I'm extremely happy with the way it turned out to be, a perfect grip.

That's what I was thinking. And will be a good one also, very hard steel for how thin it is.

Word of advice, never ever follow throw on ideas you get while in the restroom... they both stinks.

Don't feel bad I did the same. Bought a set of Pachmayer off EBAY thought they were the compac but were the presentation. Looked stupid on a Charter snubie. I cut them off with a die grinder with cutting wheel. Got the shank out but the steel still showed. Broke down and through them away last night

I have a set I did this to myself, you are not done yet. Get a fine hacksaw or a dremel cutoff wheel and cut off the metal flush with where you have removed the rubber/plastic. Then file or grind smooth. They will not be pretty in the end, but are VERY functional. I wish one of the big gripmakers would come out with a design like this-covered backstrap but open butt boot design grips. I will post a few pics shortly.

Not to drift, but what's up with the shrouded barrel and dovetailed sight on that 37? Never saw one like that.

I think they call it the "power port" model on the S&W website.

J frame, what robotoid said. It's a ported 637, comes that way from S&W.

I don't have any pics of the bottom, and the grips are now boxed up in my spares box. The metal will show, I painted it black. Used correctly, the dremel can be your friend, contrary to popular opinion.

Makes for a great screw driver/drivers also. Might want to modify one side to a phillips.

I did the same modification as Robotoid. Cut each half with a metal cutting bandsaw, then carefully ground flat with a belt grinder. Blued the metal inserts and they are good to go, very comfortable and a lot less bulky!

I also did the same modification to a set of Uncle Mikes J frame Combats making "Combat Boot Grips"
Here's a pic of them next to the factory boots & factory combats.
I cut them with a hack saw & filed & sanded them as best I could then cold blued the exposed metal.
