Failure to eject

Ive seen the issues with failure to eject and the fixes for it.
This weekend I went shooting and after 300-400 rounds I started have FTE. Ammo was federal bulk ammo. As I shot more and more, a total of about 600 rounds it became more frequent, but only 10-15 times total.
This is only my 3rd time shooting the gun, the other times I shot about 250 rounds but it was CCI.
My question is do you think this was due to the gun being dirty or a sign of things to come.

3 things you can check

1) Did it happen with the CCI the other two times? No? Maybe your gun doesn't like Federal Bulk. All rifles are different. Go back and shoot CCI again and see if you have any problems.

2) Keep track to see which magazines you are using when you have a FTE. Could be a defective magazine.

3) Clean the rifle and see if it still happens.

My guess is that sounds like the ammo. Good luck.

Yeah that was my thought, I just found it strange I put 300 rounds through with no issue. Now that I think about it the first 300 were left over from a 525 bulk pack and the remaining were from the 325 cans. Possibly just a poor batch of ammo? I did have a couple FTF with the cans as well.

It's dirty, take it apart and clean it thoroughly. That's been my experience.

This did not happen using a 15-22. However, when I bought my daughters 10-22's, both rifles functioned flawlessly with just about any .22 LR round except for the older Federal Hi-Power .22 LR round nose ammunition which produced failures to eject. Only that single brick of ammunition gave any problems of any kind. Hopefully your problems w/ the Federal .22 LR ammo are an anomaly that will not be repeated with other brands/types of ammunition.

Check your ejector. It should be completely solid. You should not be able to wiggle it in and out or side to side. If you can, then that's your problem. I've sent mine back to S&W 4 times for this issue. It comes back fixed, but the ejector will inevitably loosen and begin causing FTE again, so the last time this happened I bought the barrel wrench from Jody and some vice blocks and pulled the barrel out. The problem was that the ejector is held onto the breech block by one roll pin, which wears a divot in the ejector (soft steel?). By tapping the roll pin slightly further, it seized the ejector and holds it stable. For now.
If this is your problem, and you haven't played the "Send it back to the factory" game yet, you might want to try that.
However, if you own a 15-22, you really should own a barrel wrench. You will end up using it eventually.

i have the same thing with the recent box of m22 winchester i got.
1 out of almost every mag will be like that. it refuses to fire, then when you try and extract it - its stuck.

some of the bullets bend going in. after i take a knife and pry it out - the head is so loose and bent. sometimes its nicked HARD(like a chunk is missing).

Sometimes pulling back the charging handle, the round only goes in half way. but if i use CCI MiniMags = everything is smooth.

OP just try a different brand of ammo

I just shot my new 15-22 for the first time. Planed on running 200 CCI mini mags though it followed by fed, and Win bulk. After about 50 rds of minis, I started getting FTFs and FTEs. Then 1 must not have seated, It fired, but blew the case out at just above the rim. Gunpowder every where, so I tried some more CCI, then fed. Started getting FTEs in every mag. I am going to give the gun a good cleaning, then a very lite lube on the bolt rails only. I apriciate any suggestions. Thank you BiggB

Sounds like you had an out of battery fire.

Not sure if your weapon is damaged now or not. Be careful. Try researching it on this forum. I think it happened relatively often when the rifle first came out. I believe S&W made mods to the rifle to fix it.

Allot of 22lr ammo is dirty and this dirt can cause jams along with other issues as well. A good way to see what is going on with a jamming action is to do a video of the ejection process. I did this with my Glock AA conversion kit which jammed allot. I hand cycled the action as fast as I could to simulate actual firing and was able to watch what was happening. This allowed me to correct the problem and have a fun, feed, fire, eject anything conversion kit. So if you have a good fast camera maybe this is a way to find out whats up.

Clean it!

Be careful not to leave too much lubricant.

Leaving excess lubricant can create 'mud' that gums things up.

You may find that some ammo is dirtier than others, but that just hastens the 'mud' build up - it doesn't create the problem.

Although I have never fired 600 rounds at one sitting, I have fired many more than that in one season shooting a Ruger Mark I without cleaning it without problems (my first target team coach was insistent that I not clean my Remington M52C for fear of wrecking it for the season - I'm sure I over generalized to pistol competition).

Just my opinion, of course.

OP just try a different brand of ammo

A clean gun is a happy gun. But I'd stay far away from the M-22's if you can. I've had horrible results (search around, others have too). I was getting FTF almost every other round. It's total junk. I'd take Remington GB's over the M-22...

thanks for that post kev. its strange, because the first box i ever ran of theirs a few months ago was flawless. this box is garbage.

i got really worried, up until i tried minimags(which cycled flawlessly). glad i am not the only one.

i am thinking its the fast production/lack of QC, to keep up with the recent high demand.

No problem! I'd be happy if it's just a production run issue. The M-22 is pretty decently priced if it would work, plus it's not as dirty as some of the others. I've had flawless use out of the Federal American Eagles, as well as the Blazer bricks you see from time to time.

I've got a sleeve of Mini Mags that I'm dying to try, just trying to hold off until I get some free time to zero the scope
