I wanted to let everyone here know what happened to my mp 15-22 that I bought last Oct. at Walmart. It shot great until the summer came. This summer I got a bunch of ftf(failure to feed) while shooting with my nephew at the farm. The bullet would be pointed straight up and crimped between bolt and feed ramp. I let my nephew load the mags so you know I assumed the usually, that he was not letting the bullets stagger in the mags. I have about 15 mags and they are all numbered with paint markers. While out that day I loaded some and he loaded some. I was getting the ftf with the ones I loaded and I knew they were loaded correctly. I then went home cleaned and looked over the gun. All looked normal IMO. I then decided to head to the range in a week or so and see if I could diagnose the problem. I loaded all the magazines with 25 rounds. Half cci tactical and half blazer. I kept track of how all the magazines performed. So here is my result.

85% of the ftf came with 4-6 rounds left in the mags. All 16 magazines had same type results.

So I then went home and started looking around at the gun. I cleaned it again. I found nothing. I then had 2 new long 10 round magazines in packaging. I would load these and they would get the same ftf as the 25 round.

I then decided to call Smith and Wesson. I described my problem to the support person and they had me send the gun in for repair. I also sent 2 x 10 round long magazines and 1 x 25 round magazine. I sent in a description of the problem and how I went about my troubleshooting. They sent me a fedex label and off it went to SW.

I just got the gun back today and here is what the paper from SW said

Characteristic Description
Repaired: Replaced BBL.

Looks like I got a new barrel. Not sure what was up but we will see when I head to the range to test it out. It could have been the feed ramp or ejector. I think it was the feed ramp but who knows I am not the designer of the gun or do I claim to be a gunsmith.

I will post results of my testing once I head back to range.

Does sound like a feedramp issue. I had a few ftf when using bulk Federal so I polished the feedramp and it seemed to help. But nothing like you had. Keep us posted.

Yes, please let us know your results. Before getting my 15-22, I test fired one at the local range. I noticed this too several times and while it ALMOST swayed to something other than a 15-22, I chalked it up to a dirty rental. I have kept track of all my rounds....about 1K so far. I can count the # of FTFs on two hands. It has been less than 10. So 1% FTF. I can attribute half of those to my son loading 200 rounds.

Update

Had the rifle back for a good bit but no time to test. Went out today and shot 100 rounds in 4 mags. I shot cci mini mag, federal walmart stuff, federal high velocity and blazer. So I shot hollow point and regular. All shot flawless. I loaded all mags myself and all seem to cycle great. I will say I like the cci mini mag the best. I also like federal a lot. Not a huge fan of the blazer. I think blazer has a lot of wax on it. Which would cause a lot of issues if you shot a bunch without cleaning. Any opinions on how much wax blazer has on it and the effects on the mp 15-22?

update

I put about 500 rounds through the new barrel this weekend with various types of ammo without cleaning it. I shot cci 36 grain hollow point, blazer, federal walmart stuff and federal lighting. I had 1 ftf(cci 36 grain hollow point) and 2 failure to fire(1 federal walmart bulk/1 blazer) after shooting about 500 rounds. The gun worked much better. I used 6 different 25 round mags and all performed great. I had the mags numbered to diagnose any mag issues if they did arise. I did have a problem with 1 of the mags. The bolt did not feed the bullet to the chamber with 4-5 rounds left. It was very strange. I pulled charging handle and it did not feed it again. It looked like the bullet just did not feed enough from magazine for bolt to grab it. I unloaded the magazine and pushed down on bullet it. The bullet looked like it was in proper place after that. I loaded mag and pulled charging handle and all was fine after that. Strange indeed. I will say all is operating as expected now and very happy with rifle.

My gun seems to really like the federal lightning, it feeds and cycles my bolt nicely. It seems fairly clean for 22lr ammo too. It seems to be my favorite right now. This can always change.

My rifle shoots everything except Winchester white box .22LRHP. I can shoot all of the Remington loads (Thunderbolt, Golden Bullets --- even Subsonic) without any issues. As soon as I load the Winchester in any of my mags I get FTF on just about every round. Luckily my M&P .22 Pistol can eat that stuff as I have 1000 rounds of it......

Hey Guy, You might want to try this. Do not use the mag for a rest, and use nothing but 40gr bullets. It works for me.

I had FTF issues with mine until I started using CCI tactical. After those were gone and I could not buy more, I found frog lube. Since using Frog Lube I've had no feeding issue with ANY of my weapons. I shoot crappy Golden Bullets flawlessly now. Love it.

It won't fix a screwed up gun but it will help a good one run better.

There have been some issues where the mags would start to separate at the feel lips. This will cause rounds to jam up so you may want to check this. The fix is to just seperate the lips as much as possible and get some super glue in the gap and then just hold it closed tightly for a few and your done.
