I saw an old 32 Long S&W last week at the lgs. Got to thinking about it and went back yesterday, lots of problems, consignment gun and filthy, I could not tell if the bore had been doing sewer line duty or what. I passed, but he was putting 2 trade ins in the case, a newer lock 66 and a 686 in 4". Slick and clean, no box.

He had it marked at about 799. Is this too high? I just checked GB and the only 2 with bids were at 600 and 675. All the rest were sitting unbid upon.

Has the 686 peaked? Do folks prefer the blue 586?

I've shot my Dad's 6" 586 and liked it, been thinking 686 in 4" since I sold all my Pythons.

I'm hoping some straight arrows will help me out on this one.

Thanks,
Duane.

From what i have seen around recently, a no lock 686, 6 to 700 with no box used but tight and clean. Theo

agreed 600 to 700
if you really try and wait you might see 500 but that could take a while
depends on your hurry
Good luck

IMO,you should easily be able to find one for $650. However, depending on fees and shipping, you would be approaching $700,or more. How bad do you want one? $799 is too much,if you ask me.
f.t.

$800 sounds like gunbroker prices. He is probably over asking on the rare chance someone will give him asking price, or when people try to haggle him down he can still get ~$700.

Personally, I would pass on it as that's a premium price for a 686.

If you are buying it because you want it you can make a hundred dollars worth of effort and time driving around looking for one. If you like checking out guns that is a little too much. Otherwise what is your time and effort/gas worth? Your call.

+1. I you have to look at 12 gun how's before you find one for less, how much did you just spend in gas and entrance fees?

Does it have the original target grips? Those alone are worth $50-100. If so, I would offer him $650 and then work up to $700.

Finding one for sale locally for me would be a problem.

Around here LGSs usually will bargain ......3% (for cash) to 10%(or more) depending on what they have in the gun and how good/knowledgeable a customer you are..........

Offer $600 and see what happens....... really nothing to lose!

New ones go for about $730 at my LGS.
Maybe a little less on line, but then there are shipping and FFL fees.
Those add about $65 in these parts.

Best,
Rick

I have seen new 686 at local retailers marked at $729.99 to $769.99.Used I would offer $600 and expect to be at $650 after some negotiating.I would be willing to bet that they are only into that Revolver $500

I would think the 686 and the 66 4" would sell for about the same money. i averaged the last 10 66's that sold on Gunbroker and came up with about $629. These varied from little used in matching box to gun alone with rubber grips but did not include anything that wasn't in good condition or better. Whenever I have put a non gun item up on Ebay, I've always started it low and let the market determine it's worth. These folks that start a revolver at the highest price it would possibly ever reach must be incredibly stupid or else they are waiting for the buyer who is incredibly stupid. Checking the price of sold items on Gunbroker is a good way to figure out what some folks are paying in that market. Your neighborhood may be different but probably not higher. I would cheerfully pay $600 for a nice 66 but can't seem to find one yet.

They will pop up. I picked up a shooter grade 6" 686-5+ no box, but had original good years and a set of VZ grips for $550 locally last summer. Sold the VZ's for $65 on here, so that put me into it for $485. I know it wasn't a 4", but it's a Hoot to shoot.

You did not mention if the 686 was pre or with the lock. I just bought a new 686 3 inch with lock for $691. If it was a used with lock I would go no higher than 5 bills. Nice pre lock start @ 6 bills. 4 inch 686 is pretty common.

I have around $450 in my 586, 4" My 686-3, (a 6") was purchased online for $580, & shipping. It took me a while to get 1 at the price I was willing to pay. They are both great guns to me! Good luck with your hunt! Bob
