Last night I was watching the Pac 12 Championship Game. Oregon vs. USC. I noticed that the stands were completely empty. However it sounded like crowd cheering, etc. on big plays. Don't know why but it became annoying after a while.

Was it just me or were there enough fans you couldn't see on TV or was the crowd noise from another game put in by the network to make the game more realistic to the TV viewers? By the way it was a good game and Oregon won.

It is pumped in similar to the laugh track they use on TV shows. My understanding, at least on the pro level is the actual audio from the field is NSFW so you either have complete silence or fake crowd noise.

About like canned laughter on a comedy show. My niece is a coach in
the WNBA and I tried to get the remote cheering section job, for a fee
of course. The league actually paid some coaches who coached from
their home.

It's happening over here (UK) too; Autumn International Rugby matches played in deserted stadia that sounded like full- capacity crowds were sitting in them. England -v- Wales match even had Welsh Male Voice Choirs belting out favourites like Cwm Rhondda and Calon Lan, for goodness sake!

It just doesn't feel quite right and I found it really rather un-nerving - bit like much of the rest of 2020, to be honest. Ah well, I really am getting old (and grumpier by the day!)

It is like most things associated with TV, movies, news, entertainment, associated actors, newscasters, producers, and finally owners, THEY ( nebulus I know, and I did not mention another entity due to forum rules) decide what is best for us and occasionally get it right or close to right?

Did they have the stupid cardboard people cut outs in the stands too?

Baseball fans dealt with this throughout the entirety of the 2020 MLB season. Fox Sports even had digitized crowds in a lot of their wide shots. It was pretty creepy at best when you got a good look at it.

During the post season they changed things up slightly and used actual crowd sounds from each team's ballpark. For example, when the Rays hit a home run you heard the crowd noise and the "home run" fog horn blast from Tropicana Field.

I watch a lot of European football/socccer and when they don't have the crowd noise, everything is heard on and around the pitch. EVERYTHING. Given some of the colorful language, I can understand why it's piped in for broadcast.

It was weird at first, but it doesn't bother me.

They been doing it all season. Really irritating. Premier League started out with just the ambient empty stadium noise. You could hear the managers shouting instructions. They eventually caved but you can get the non fake feed on the NBC Sports app

I don't know if I have ever such bad reffing in the Pac 12 as this year. One team got 4 timeouts in 1 half? Bad spots, blown calls, non calls. BLIND.

PAC 12 started late. The crews didn't get in enough practice. Mock games, calling practice scrimmages, etc. tTakes a lot of work to stay on your game, and the PAC 12 and the B1G hurt themselves by waffling around.
