Fake Surpressors Now an NFA Item? GSG 5

The reason these vil. The nfa is because they are hollow in the middle and sealed on both ends.. if you were to port your barrel (which is legal) and put the factory shroud back on it would be suppressed which is illegal without a tax stamp... hope this helps

Sorry to say but this sounds like BS to me. Over the years when ATF has determined that something that had previously been sold now falls under NFA rules the owner is allowed to keep the item as long as they register the item with ATF and the $200 tax fee is waved. A good example is the Street Sweeper.

U can go to ATIs web site and look at what they say...

Ya I tried to steer people from it.. but its too late now.. people just need to trash their pvc.. and move on...it was fun while it lasted:D

Wow, the way ATI is handling this "recall" is really crappy ... don't think I will be doing any business with them in the future ...

What is wrong w/ what they are doing? They ask you to simply remove it and ship it to them w/ your serial number and they will send you another one. How much simpler could that be?

Ati isn't the manuf. They r the importer.. these guns past threw customs so why didn't the atf stop them then you know they were inspected... the biggest problem I have is they want u to send in your shroud and they will send u a new one as they get them in... I waited 7 months on my gun I'm not waiting another 7 for my new shroud

If they send you a new one w/o your old one in their hands then what's to say you will return your illegal one? That's why they are doing it this way.
I agree that when these guns went through customs they should have been checked more thoroughly. It was okay then, why not now ya know.

Exactly. Why can't they send you the new one first so there is no "downtime"? They could very easily track who sent the old one back and who didn't, then send the ATF or whatever to collect the "taxes" for NFA item.

Im not a huge fan of the PVC myself as you may know. But Im still not sure how a "shroud" of any kind would not fall under this new rule.

edit:
****NEVERMIND**** just read the other forum, dumb dumb dumb.

Like I said b/4, they don't know that you will send your old one in. Not everyone is honest and they don't know you or me from Tom, Dick, or Harry. Yeah, that "taxes" idea would never hold up. I could just say I mailed it but I guess they never got it.

its not a new rule.. it enforcing an old 1... the batf clarified a long time ago what a suppressor is... if it can be attached to any gun and used as a suppressor then it is a suppressor... the gsg5-sd can is a suppressor by design they are hollow yes it was not intended to be used as one but it can be.. the shrouds like i make are like the replacement shrouds for the gsg..they are solid and open on the ends... you can not screw them on anything and it suppress it.. period... if anything it will make it louder buy a few dbs

What's interesting is that they are making you ship it back. Since the ATF has declared it a NFA item, you technically can't just drop it in the mail, especially since it's now an unregistered NFA item. This recall is a recipie for disaster. Your average person trying to comply could very easily face felony charges.

In order to comply with the ATF "recall," ATI has to associate each non-compliant shroud to an actual weapon. The best way to do so is by tying each shroud to a weapon by SN to show which have and which have not been fixed. I believe ATI also stated that ATF agents are in their facility monitoring the change outs. The recall is for the larger rifle shrouds at this point, not the smaller carbine shrouds. The matter is discussed at length, by ATI, in this thread at AR15.com:

ATI / ATF SD Fake Suppressor Update - AR15.COM

I read the full listing on AR15. While I do not own the weapon I have to say that the way the company is handling the problem if true is unprofessional. First they do not want you to call. Any NFA issues have always had an 800 number set up by the company in violation for questions. You are also stuck paying for shipping? I just have to say that I will be making sure that I do not purchase any items made by them.
