Fatal Bear Attack in NJ

I live in Pike county, across the river from New Jersey. Pike county has the largest bear population in the state. I lived here for 11 years and never had any problem with bears. But this attack shows that bears are wild animals and thus unpredictable. You have to be careful. Right now we have a cop killer on the loose up here. That's something more dangerous than a bear right now.

Get around a female with cubs and see what happens. I can hear the Momma burping already. It's silly for a smart person to frolic through the woods without some sort of self protection plan from anyone or anything.

When you hear there teeth banging together it's time to get out of dodge, like run forest run...... When they smack there jaws together banging there teeth that's there last warning before they attack. If the wind is in your direction you will smell them first. If they don't know your there they are so noisy. Once they know your there they are as quiet as a church mouse. I have no clue how they can walk through crunchy leaves and snapping twigs in a stealth mode. If they have a clear way out from getting away from you they will leave. If you startle them or box them in they may attack quickly.

There are areas in Jersey that are amazingly wild considering it's the densest population of any other state. Or at least they used to be.

Drop someone off in the middle of the Pine Barrens and good luck finding your way out.

Y'all run - I'll stand there calmly and watch the bear chase you.

Just like running from a dog --- They chase by instinct....

A bear can run at 35mph on even ground. Down hill they have problems because there front legs are shorter that there back legs. They stumble while trying to run down hill but they can roll down hill very fast. It's very hard to get away from a bear that's chasing you. In most cases your his lunch.

When the 350/400lb bear appeared in my backyard I just lost my rottie. My lab was running up to it as my wife was running to the dog. She was screaming the whole time. She got the dog about 20' feet from the bear.
Luckily this big male just froze probably thinking who is this screaming crazy lady. I was upset and told her she was lucky this big bear didn't attack. I told her the heck with dog if he's that stupid.

This season all my fruit trees are bare, my raspberries are all gone, I have a 100' row of them. He hasn't touched my garden yet.

We know he's around by the way the dog acts. Sometimes he sniffs the air and looks at the raspberry bushes.

We know it's around and share the same area with it. My first thing I found proof wise of it was a track in the freshly tiller corn patch. The second thing was I put out those brick sized feeder berry and corn blocks to feed the deer. In one night all of them were missing. With no tracks I didn't know what took them. Up in the woods I have a moltrie deer feeder with corn going from the first snow storm till the spring thaw. I have a metal garbage pail with feed corn to fill the moltrie feeder. I have the garbage pail strapped to a tree with the lid strapped. I found the garbage pail on its side. Then we had the encounter with the dog and seeing it. I don't feed the deer till the dead of winter now.

BearBios interwebs must be down......

I've seen a few, never been messed with by one. Had a buddy attacked by a mamabear, he got chewed up pretty good and spent about 6 months getting rid of the infection from the bites. I always pack something substantial when I'm walkin' (or even drivin') in the woods.

Never underestimate a bear. That could be bad news......

Chatsworth has had a couger for a couple of years roaming around town.
Pemberton has a bear around the middle school.
Stafford Twp. had the elementary school shot up by a Air Force jet a few years ago. The pines have a lot of surprises.
