Here is my vote. Hands down my favorite J Frame. It is a Black finished 642 (yep not 442). 642 Pro Series Power-Port.

As you can see there is a dovetail cut into the barrel for the front sight. I put a Trijicon night sight in there. The barrel appears a little longer because it has a port cut into the top in front of the sight. It has a full length ejector rod (which is a very nice feature for positive extraction, the short rods do NOT do a good job). Full lug. It has a beautiful black finish and zero white filled markings (no trade mark or airweight insignias). It is the same weight as any airweight (15 ozs). And looks awesome.

Smith did a very small run of these a couple of years ago. I picked this up new in the box on GB for $420 2 years ago. They pop up every once in a while.

Recoil is noticeably tamer thanks to the port.

It conceals just as easy as any of my J Frames.

Best looking, best shooting/handling short barreled J Frame made in my opinion. I also own and carry a 442 and a 360PD.

All I know about J-frames is that my old (pre-lock, .38 standard pressure) stainless steel 640 is beautiful. It shipped with smooth wood grips.

I have a few, but the carry J is a 342PD with an XS front night sight. Hard to beat the weight....640-1 would be next in line and of course XS front night sight

Love that black finish.

I wish I could get my 649 done over in that...

649-3 is my fave ( and only ) J...

The 3 I have model60 from 1970 bought new 337ti bought never fired & 340pd recently bought new all 3 no ILS but I carry the 340pd the most. Favorite? Don't really know.

My favorite J frame?

I have 3 Js at the moment, but my favorite is a long carried Model 60 I bought new in 1973. I carried that little gun for close to 15 years.

It had when I got it the standard trigger pull. About the same effort to fire as what Superman used to squeeze hunks of coal into diamonds. As I normally only fire double action (why learn two trigger pulls) I had a serious go at the innards and some polishing and spring surgery made things much nicer.:D

That was in the era long before the spring kits came out so you had to work slow and carefully. I learned a lot from a buddy who was an armorer for a 100 man cop shop and he checked it out when I was done and said it had a decent trigger pull now.

I dont do a lot of CC with my guns. But when I do, this one usually gets the job. 60-10 wearing Hogue woods. Aside from CC duty it is a great trail gun when the only thing you have to worry about is snakes with or without legs. I have never gotten past the desire for adjustable sights even though I know they are not necessary.

Favorite? Hard to choose a favorite, but I can tell you what is my least favorite. . . anything with a titanium cylinder or scandium frame. The Bodyguard series in Airweight always made good sense as it allowed cocking for a precise shot and DAO for a more rapid shot. However, as I have come to believe in the DAO concept, and the fact that a precise shot is not likely to be needed, and if it is, a J frame might not be a great choice for that, the Airweight Centennial now wins this contest for me, hands down. I will take the Model 642.

I think my mint condition original 42 pre L airweight that I picked up last month. 100% for $330. I added some black T grips. The perfect lemon squeezer pocket security blanket to me.

I have lots of guns for Concealed carry but gravitate to the 42.

When I say I carry a 42 most are surprised when I don't pull out a Glock. Doesn't look like an almost 50 year old piece.

Very fond of the basic snub M-60, esp. in the 60-7 version, but overall probably would choose the M-60-4. A great outdoorsman's gun as well as a small defense tool.
