Bought this early 90s vintage 649-2 about 15 years ago...has been an excellent shooter.

Have a waist pack that is grab n' go....has the loaded gun, 12 extra rounds of ammo, extra .38 Super/9mm cylinder, holster and moon clips for the extra cylinder..

Only ammo carried in it is the Buffalo Bore 158 Outdoorsman for the woods and the HP version for town...both clock in the 1050 fps area...

I think I had talked to you about getting one recently and having a second cylinder like your's done as well. I had an M&P 340 for many years but recently traded it away and found my 649-2. It's much nicer to shoot being all steel.

I EDC a 49 no dash. It's been refinished to look like a 649. I carry Gold Dot Short Barrel 135 grain +P and a belt pouch for an 8 round speed strip of the same. I have the DeSantis speed loader belt pouch and HKS speed loader, but just found no reason to switch.

I picked up mine from another member here on the forum. It's one of my favorite carry guns:

Back in the day... the original 649 was my BUG/off-duty gun for many moons. Those little service stocks were not pleasant with factory 158 LSWCHP +P loads. But, it was one of the best shooting J frames I ever had. Shot so well I used it on the 50 yard qualification course and made 59/60.

When we made the switch to pistols, I sold it to buy a S&W 3913. What a fool!

While I don't carry it, I'm inordinately fond of my 649. It's definitely a classic.

Decades ago a business associate started carrying a S&W M38. I thought it was a terribly odd looking thing. As many years passed I grew fond of the Model but never acquired one. Sometime in the early or mid-1990s an Internet buddy offered a M649 for sale for $300. I snapped it up. Presently, it's with me virtually every day.

Some days it rides in a Galco Summer Special on my belt but most often it rides in a Mika pocket holster which has replaced the Galco nylon pocket holster.

I really, REALLY like that gun!

Those are some fine guns showing here.

I "loaned" mine to my middle son and its gone, gone, gone forever (along with a .44 mag that was just gathering dust in the safe).

Now if I could only find one that looks like it was mashed in the muck by a herd of Holsteins and priced like an after-Christmas wrapping paper sale I'd be all over it. (I just picked up a model 36 that fulfilled those two requirements and I sure hope it works out).

As a bona-fide Smith fan-boy I shudder at the idea of buying something "like" a 49...but household budgets being what they are, does anyone have any suggestions of similar semi-concealed-hammer-fired-j-frames that might be an acceptable substitute for a Smith? Just wondering.

A Colts Detective Special, Cobra or Agent with the factory hammer shroud is pretty close, but, unless you get lucky, you won't save money.
