I recently purchased a Model 1076 pistol in good condition with just some holster wear and minor scratches. It also came with a letter from Smith & Wesson's Roy Jinks confirming that it was shipped to the FBI in the fall of 1990 and returned to Smith & Wesson in June of 1992.

Since it has to stay at my FFL while I wait for a New Jersey Handgun Permit, I thought I would have him send it to Smith & Wesson for service and stainless bead blast refinishing of the frame and slide.

Considering the dwindling surplus of parts, the age of the pistol and the fact that I will not have the opportunity to fire it before it goes in, is there anything habitually problematic with these guns or anything other than springs that just makes good sense to replace now?

Thank you,

JSS

1076 service

Hi JSS, Ialso have an FBI 1076 and I did not send mine back to S&W. I detailed stripped the entire gun (putting back the de-cocking lever is a real chore) and cleaned and polished the internals and it runs great and also very accurate. I think S&W will make your gun work very well. Mine has the letter U under the trigger guard which means it was a used gun and also inspected by Smith.

JSS, as an FBI 1076 collector I recommend that you do not send your pistol in for work. Like any collectible it will retain more value in its current condition. Did the pistol come with the original box? D

No, it came with one magazine with a yellow follower and the S & W letter. You bring up a good point about refinishing vs. leaving the pistol in the original condition. Because of the NJ permit approval time, I thought SW service would be a good idea. Instead, I will field strip at my dealer and give it a good cleaning and re-evaluate it before I do anything.

Thank you for the advice.

On another subject, do you know anyone selling palm swell grips for the pistol? I'll send you a PM.

Thank you,

JSS
