FedEx Refusal

Maybe it's just me from living in NJ for too long but declaring a firearm seems to me to scream, "steal me". Just saying.

I agree with the original post; S&W needs to update their instructions.

Both Fed Ex and UPS corporate rules state guns can only be shipped overnight/next day. It is not a law, it is just company policy. Some clerks will let you get away 2 day shipping... others won't touch the evil package.

As stated, it is a violation of federal law to ship without declaring the firearm.

Disassembled or not, serial numbered frames/receivers must be shipped and declared as firearms.

Me and the local Fed Ex people get along real well, I know their rules, and they follow them. I have educated more than one clerk (okay two); but I was patient & did it politely.

Springfield sent me a label for my custom work, 2 day shipping. Needed something else done and again 2 day shipping through Fedex.

Every time I've shipped a firearm for any reason and it's been at at UPS hub. Whenever the firearm is declared I get raised eyebrows all around and a "we don't need to know that" from somebody.

I really think they just don't know.

The real question is do they not know their own rules ( ignorance VS stupid ), are they told to make it difficult? I have sent 2 guns to SW this month via their label, with fed-ex. SW emailed it to me, I put it on a box, called fedex, they picked it up. The SW label's bar code should be telling ( fedex ) what it is, not the driver, but the company. If someone from fed/ups refuse you,go up the chain till you get results. Make sure you get names, report it to main corp. Be Safe,

Just went through this with Fedex. Had it packaged with the return label from Smith. When I told her it was a handgun, I got the same grief that it had to go priority overnight. I told her had done this before, this was the complying with written instructions from the company, she narrowed it down to "a person can't ship guns that way." I asked for a supervisor. That lady told her that the company "had a special agreement with that company" and I could do that. They then took it but the counter help was not happy. First time I've had that problem in a long time and her nonstop glare at me showed me that she very much disliked being corrected. Good help is hard to find and harder to train and I'm pretty much exhausted at the level of incompetency I see in most every daily interaction I have. I'm not as patient as I used to be with nitwits, there are too many of them.

I once sent a pre-labeled box to Para and slipped it I'm a corner box down the street in my business park. It got there just fine, despite what the Mfg . Says. I agree, what they don't know don't hurt them.

This whole thread is just proof that all Fed-Ex and UPS care about is draining our pockets dry when shipping a Handgun. So let me get this straight....I have to pay more because your Employees are Thieves?

Sorry to hear of all the problems. The FedEx hub near me seems to be pretty squared away shipping handguns. For a while they'd ask for the ffl of the receiver but that hasn't happened for a couple of years.

Good luck.

I haven't shipped a firearms anywhere in years where I didn't ask my local FFL/good buddy to do it for me because it's so much easier that way.

OTOH, there were two times when I shipped guns myself, back about 15 years ago, for "repairs" (action jobs; not for broken stuff) and I operated in the world of stupid and packed the guns myself and MAILED them USPS without saying a word to the Post Office. Then someone told me that while I was allowed to ship guns for repairs I couldn't use USPS, had to declare them, etc. OOPS!

So I called the first gunsmith (now deceased; one of the finest) and his wife answered the phone. I told her what I did and she laughed and said, "Don't worry about; it's not the first time and it will get here." Sure enough, no problem, much to my relief!

The other gun went to S&W. I called Customer Service, told them what I did, they said much the same thing as the first lady only they didn't know who I was and didn't ask. Sure enough, much to my relief, same result!

Lesson learned, no police at my door, all's well that ends well, but I DO NOT SEND GUNS MYSELF anymore. Call me chicken but also call me lazy - too much red tape when I have a buddy to do it using his FFL.

Interesting. I have shipped many handguns with FedEx and was never required to ship overnight.

That's what it says in their site. At some point between about 2005 and 2010, they must've changed, because I used to ship overnight for a reasonable rate. Priority overnight rates are so high, it's cheaper for me to go through an FFL (I've sold quite a bit on Gunbroker.)I've sold several on gunbroker, and it's much cheaper to go through a local FFL (I have a very reliable one.). UPS was the same when last I checked.

I believe USPS will ship handguns from individuals to a mfr for repair. I don't know if they still do, but I've used them to ship back to Ruger.

Yes clerks are usually clueless. My advice is to go to their website and print a copy their policy to have it in hand when you go to ship.

I may be wrong, but one time I returned a rifle for repairs they said if you disassemble it could be shipped as parts I did through USPS with no problems
Long guns may be shipped through USPS, but handguns must go by common carrier. Disassembling them does not change their status to parts. It is still a gun as long as the receiver is in the box.

If YOU ship it then it must go overnight and into the locked cage between movements. S&W should have sent YOU the correct shipping label to do this. I know they did for me a year ago or so.

If your FFL ships it then it can go much cheaper to include USPS. It sounds like they gave you the shipping label that should have gone to an FFL since they have different shipping ability than you ever will.

Once again, I may be wrong.
Your understanding is very close.
When S&W sends anyone a shipping label, this means S&W is the shipper. This is why it can be shipped by 2 Day Air.

When shipping a handgun back for repair, use the home pickup option. It doesn't cost any more and is much more convenient. I have done this several times.

Also, I always declare to the driver that it's a gun. Every time he's responded with, "So?" I will continue to declare because it's both FedEx policy and fed law.

Postal regulations do not forbid shipping long guns by individuals via USPS. However, if you tell the post office clerk what is in the box, she/he will not accept it. And arguing postal regulations with them will do no good. At least that has been my experience. I have shipped long guns via FedEx green label ground with no problems in their accepting them. I don't know about handguns, as I have not shipped any.

I was shipping UPS and they want to know what's in the box?

If it's a firearm the clerk wants to see my ffl and the ffl where it's going.
Then she makes copies and where there stored I don't have a clue. I don't like it when any ups worker can look at my paper work.

I have no idea which state your in but obviously ups is less than informed. In the last 20 yrs I have never shown UPS, Fed-ex, or USPS the FFL to where it is going, and I have my FFL on file at the local USPS but ups/fedex do not have a copy and will NEVER get one. You do not need an FFL to Ship handgun/rifle via ups/fed ex, nor do you have to show them the FFL of the receiver. Take it up the chain of command till they do it. Sometimes they just need to be trained like a dog. Be Safe,

I mailed a rifle back to Marlin. The clerk looked at me funny when I told her what it was. Fortunately the postmaster, who is a friend of mine, happened by and told her it was perfectly okay.

I owned one of the recalled Springfield Armory XDs. 45's. I used the S.A. Website instructions and entered in my info and my XDs pistol's info and was given an R.A. # and was e-mailed a link to print a pre-paid "2-Day" Fed Ex label. My local Fed Ex was out of their designated boxes, so I purchased a box and affixed the label. The "2-Day" delivery method was apparently an arrangement specifically made for the recall with FedEx as the local FedEx knew about the exception to their Overnight rule for firearms when they saw the ship to address. So apparently they do make exceptions for manufacturers if it has been pre-arranged. The question is does S&W have an arrangement with Fed Ex for 2nd Day delivery?

Another point about S&W's instructions (udated Feb '04) says to bring it to "Fed Ex World Service Centers." This has been renamed to "Fed Ex Ship Center." You won't find reference to World Service Centers anywhere. S&W needs to update their instructions. I was concerned maybe I went to the wrong location but it now has a different name. As far as I know the Ship Centers are locations with the loading docs, warehouse and lots of trucks which is the place I went to.

I also don't understand why Fed Ex would have a problem using a Fed Ex Express box when the label is a Fed Ex Express label and the charge paid is for Fed Ex Express. They told me the box can't say Fed Ex anywhere on it. What difference does that make? Once you put the label on it, it says Fed Ex Express.

You got played. I ship FEDX and UPS daily and I have given Fedx express boxes in a ups box and vice versa. They dont care whos box its in. She jerked your chain
