Feedramp

I wonder if the box was sealed when it arrived... perhaps someone at the retailer (academy?) opened the box to play around with the rifle (pow! pow!..rat-tat-tat-tat-tat!)... poked around and broke the feed ramp off (..oops!), then looked around to make sure the violation wasn't noticed and quietly put the gun back into the box (whew!)... ....well... it *could* happen

i guess i can't say for sure when or how the feedramp came off, but i know it wasn't there the first time i tried shooting it and it was purchased new from academy. yeah, i could get it to chamber about 1 or 2 out of every 10 rounds - i'm surprised i didn't have an OOB - bent a whole bunch of .22 rounds.

There's been about a half dozen reports in this Forum of 15-22 feed ramps fracturing off. How crazy is that?!? I've never heard or read of that happening with any firearm before. Not saying it never happens, but geeeeesh.... it's got to be a pretty rare occurance.... yet multiple reports with the 15-22.

Not sure there are 1/2 dozen, but at least two. I think you have to smack it with a hammer to break it. Cleaning ain't going to harm it.

i would like to know how they broke in the first place, shipping sho0uldnt break one off either.

That must be it.... folks are knocking the grime off the feed ramp with a hammer

As far as the number, I did a quick search and posted 3 old postings a few days ago (above) I'm sure there were more but I just posted the first ones I ran across. rlb and Coop posted broken feed ramps in this thread. Didn't Beck27 have a broken feed ramp too? Just ran out of fingers to count on...

S&W changed out the barrel and it's been working fine ever since.

S&W updated mine and made it right. Got it back in a week and shot it this afternoon. It has the feedramp and it looks like a different face.
Don't know what they did but it works so I am pleased. The wife likes it to. Sorry I didn't get pics but she took care of the mailing while I was away.

I didn't believe it either! I mean, how is it even possible? The firearm can't possibly chamber a round without a feed ramp, so how in tarnations was this thing "test fired" at the factory before it was shipped out.

It boggles the mind!

AND it's completely unacceptable!

To bad this happens to such a great rifle.

It is a great rifle.... I don't know how or why it would leave the factory like this, or as was stated before it somehow was broken in the retailers place. I don't see how it could be broken without force, so I'd have to say it came from the factory as such. And like I said, from a Q-C standpoint that's unacceptable! Doesn't change my opinion that's it's a great rifle.

Today was the 1000 round mark without a gun related hiccup. One squib round (primer struck but no ignition, is that right?) last weekend and that was it.

Could not be happier with the 15-22.

Squib is usually a reference to a round that has no powder or an abnormally low powder charge but the primer still goes bang. Dangerous because it can kick the bullet into the bore. Generally don't want to follow that with a good round because bad things happen with bore obstructions.

Since you have a primer hit and no detonation whatsoever, I would call that a dud.

Dud it is then, thanks for setting me straight. I almost put FTF for failure to fire but that wasn't right either.

You indeed had a Failure to Fire. Cause was a dud round, but the rifle failed to fire for some reason. Bad cartridge, no cartridge. Doesn't matter why. Immediate action and get a fresh cartridge in there. Tap, Rack (and Roll).
