I typically use Round Up for weeds but have yet to try it on my fence rows. I'm concerned about the health reports re Round Up. What are the alternatives?

The subject came up on another forum after another recent study showed negative effects w/Round Up. Some posters suggested:
Formula 1:
1/2 Gal vinegar
1/4 cup salt or epson salt
1/2 tsp dish soap
1 tsp Dr Fred Summit heat rub

Formula 2:
1 gal vinegar
1/4cup dish soap
2 cups Epsom salts..

These weeds I'm talking about are very hardy.

I use formula 2 basically
1gal white vinegar
2cups salt
2 tblspn of dish soap
Works well too, non toxic is the best thing.
But if you really wanna kick it up a notch, I use 2 gal of vinegar, that is what actually kills the weeds.

Roundup is a problem for people who are exposed to large amounts of it. Groundskeepers, mostly, at golf courses, public parks, stadiums, etc. These are people who use it by the gallon, every day of the week. The average homeowner, who squirts a little around now and then, is at practically no risk at all.

Flamethrower.

I've used a fair amount of herbicides over the years and don't claim to be an expert on health concerns with them. I've used a product called Pramitol on areas like fence rows and around buildings to stop growth for a few months. It stays in the soil for awhile so don't use it where you want anything to grow soon. Not cheap but it is effective. Glyphosphate only kills what it contacts so any seeds in the ground can still grow.

Good morning all. I like to use 2-4-D Amine Herbicide.
But this is more for broad leaf type weeds.
Great for Canada thistle, creeping jenny,
dandy lions.

The vinegar formulas above intrigue me though.

Thanks for an informative thread.

I have used regular old Salt. Same stuff in the 40-50 pound bags for water softener use.
Poured it along a chain link fence, killed the weeds/grass for a year. Now, I am in Pacific northwest and relied on the rain to wash it in. But it will work slowly without rain. sidewalk cracks, it works great too. No fear of it getting into my 62 foot well water either. pet safe too.

I Always wear rubber gloves with most any chemicals, a vapor mask, and goggles, in addition to covering up the rest of me

Devils Ivy/Golden Pothos, was planted by a neighbor, took over my fence.
Roundup comes with various strengths of Glyphosate.

I had a long gravel drive and weeds would grow on the edges. Water softener salt did the trick and they didn’t come back for a long time.I use a combination of roundup and a weed whacker at my current place

Roundup is great stuff...I just used it to annihilate a burdock infestation. The Roundup hysteria is far from settled science and started with the WHO...that tells me all I need to know.
Like the mercury in tuna. Need to eat a bunch daily.

I have rancher friends that have used Roundup for years and only have a slight glitch when they talk.😁

It isn't made to spray on your dinner.
And yet farmers spray crops with it on a regular basis, crops that become your dinner.

Several years ago PBS had a show on the use of herbicides/pesticides in the mid-west that resulted in the ground water become unsafe to use. Many areas had to build water purification plants for residents.
There is a noticeable lack of pollinators {bees, ect), that many experts say that is resulting from the use of chemicals to control weeds & bugs.

Rural folks use a special electric fence called a "weed burner." In the city, it has the added benefit of retraining neighborhood pets who use your fence as a latrine, or try to crawl through to your lawn. I have it on good authority that one frequent violator now squats rather than raising a leg ;)

Roundup is a brand name which used to have Glyphosate. You can still buy other brands that have it.
How much of a fence row?? Residential or acreage.?
Look up Brush killers, like Crossbow.

Do
you want a "green" method or chemical?

I use round up wearing long pants, long sleeve shirts, and a mask. I agree with dockmirgw's comment above. It's great stuff when used as designed. It isn't made to spray on your dinner.
I agree, just keep it off your skin, eyes and obviously don't inhale it and you'll be fine.
I'm just concerned about my dogs is all and looked for a non-toxic method.
