When sending a gun into Trijicon for new tritium vials, does the gun have to go thru a FFL on the return home. Thx

Pretty sure if the serial number is the same when it's returned to you it does not have to have a FFL transfer.

No. Trijicon should ship directly to your residence. Most likely an "adult signature" will be required. That is the normal procedure when getting a gun back from the S&W Factory.

and if it's an auto, why do you need to send the entire gun? They should only need the slide, which makes it simpler.

To be legal shipping a complete gun, there must be a FFL with either the shipper (you) or consignee (Trijicon). If it is a handgun, it must be shipped priority (USPS), or at least 2nd Day (UPS/Fed Ex). If you are shipping to Trijicon, I would ask for a copy of their FFL to avoid any problems with you shipping the gun. Chances are an adult sig will be required on return. If you removed the cylinder, it would be considered a part and could be shipped like any other package.

DO NOT FOLLOW THIS!!!!!!!!

It's a firearm with or without the cylinder. The bare frame IS the firearm.

If Trijicon holds and FFL, which I assume they do since you're mailing the whole firearm to them, it can be shipped directly back to you, with signature. Get a copy of their FFL for your records as previously advised, and do not ship USPS unless you have a FFL (shipping a handgun through USPS requires one). See if Trijicon has round trip shipping and can get you a shipping label, they can usually get better rates than you showing up at FedEx.

Technically, if you ship a "firearm" you generally need to have an FFL involved. For most guns, the firearm is the frame that has the serial number, to which other parts attach to make the functioning weapon. No matter how many parts you remove from the frame, it never stops being a "firearm" and subject to all the federal restrictions on shipping.

And if the firearm is a handgun, only licensed dealers (and perhaps licensed manufacturers, whose license also allows them to buy and sell) may ship through the Post Office. Mere mortals, including federally licensed collectors, are required to use the much more expensive private carriers.
