I would like to have a dovetail cut into my Model 10 Heavy barrel and a fiber optic sught installed. Is there any reason It could not be done? Has anyone ever done this and if so what style of cut was used? The reason I prefer a dovetail is the sight could be offset slightly to change the point of impact and if I used a common style of cut like one for a 1911 I would have a broad selection of front sights.

If your gun is a HB (Engineering changes = M10-1, -3, -6, -8, 10), then the front sight is pinned on. You might be able to find a fiber optic sight that will just pin on, however the pin holding the sight on is wider than most due to the HB width, so finding one might be tough (I've tried S&W and can't seem to find anyone who can provide availability and cost).

FYI - if you look carefully, moving the revolver from side to side, you can see where the pins is on one side or the other.... they are polished flush and can be difficult to see.

Once you determine if this is the way you want to go, you will need to measure the total height of the front sight and see if there is a fiber optic option available - most are fairly high. Regardless of pinning or dovetail, the height will be crucial as it will change your point of impact on target.
