Anyone use one of these as a cover garment? I'm looking at getting one, likely the moleskin wool vest. Long enough to cover a full sized 1911 grip? Thoughts, please..,

I own a Filson moleskin vest and I feel it may be either too short or too light for a cover garment. I wear a size 46 and am 5 foot 9, 200 lbs with the slightest remnant of an "earned long ago" beer gut.

I guess it would depend a lot on where (on your waist) you plan on carrying. At the very least, I would get an extra long if its available in this style, my vest loves to "ride up". A gun like a 1911 is going to want to show thru the lighter moleskin, maybe check out the heavier weight wool vests. I have 2 of those but again, I would want the extra long if using as a cover garment.

I carry a Beretta 21a in a Uncle Mike's #1 pocket holster in the right hand warmer pocket of these vests. Very handy when walking the dog. :) I've often wished that Filson would let a shooter design a vest for carry, flap pockets to compliment the handwarmers would be awesome, for instance.

Anyway, don't be afraid to give Filson a try, their customer service and warranty are both top notch. In the past, they have done many exchanges/replacements for me (different size, for instance) and I have remained a satisfied customer.

I am 5'10" with a 32" inseam. Long waisted to say the least. It would not cover for me. OTOH, it is a filson and you can will it to your kin.

Here in the Peoples' Republic of Maryland, we serfs cannot carry concealed, so I can't speak to how well that Filson will serve you in that regard. But....

I wear vests as an outer garment unless it is extremely cold, and I can recommend the Barbour Westmorland Waistcoat without hesitation. I've worn Westmorlands for more than 20 years. It's waxed cotton, warm, well-made, and long enough that it should cover your pistol... Westmorland Waistcoat | Barbour Lifestyle | Mens | Barbour

I will be going to Germany in a few months on vacation, and in searching for a travel vest that I can use in warm weather, I came across this one from the Duluth Trading Company.... Men's Lightweight Working Man's Utility Vest - Duluth Trading It's available in tall sizes, it's light and ventilated, has plenty of pockets, and if you look at the photos, it too should be long enough for your purposes.

Good luck! :)

I have used various vest as concealment garments for several years.

My current favorites are from Bannana Republic, I started wearing a Bannana Republic vest @ 1981 or 1982, the 511 vest, and the Filson Style 556 vest.

In fact I have to go to the BIG City tomorrow and qualify for HR 218 requirments, and I will wear the Filson vest.

I have a Filson wool vest, and I really like it, but I think it is a little too short for concealed carry, and I just could not wear a wool vest unless it was fairly cold. Definately not indoors.

Filsons seem short for that use. I own several of their garments, and the best I have found is their cruiser style. The bombers don't work so well for a belt gun, but they have plenty of pockets for good concealed carry! I can fit a full size 1911 in the zippered chest pocket.

I like their travel vest for wandering in the woods. Plenty of room to carry sammiches and whatever......again, too short for concealing a belt carry.

I have a Carhartt vest that is too short for OWB/IWB but has inside pockets that are perfect for my 9c, almost like they were made that way on purpose.
