Finally!!! 5946TSW found *Thank you Smith and Wesson! Range report on Pg. 8*

It didn't get out until Wednesday so it'll be here today (Friday).

You can be sure I'll have pics up as soon as I can, I just don't know if I'll have enough light to make them semi-decent. Tomorrow is my wife's holiday though so I may get out to the range and get some pics out there. Believe me, I'm more anxious than any of you!!

I appreciate the interest,
Scott

Yeah... I have to add my $.02 about S&W Customer Service.

I had a lot of apprehension sending in a PC 4006 IDPA model that had the right side ambi safety lever dragging on the frame and also hanging up on the edge of the frame when disengaging it.

My apprehension came from reading the posts on the revolver forums about the bad experiences people have had that were as bad as having an irreplaceable gun ruined.

But, I too experienced what the OP did... not much communication of what was going on with it (the only way I knew that it made it there was the tracking number), called in to check progress and find that it's on it way back already. And when it arrived, I got the socks knocked off me by the fantastic job they did and all of the extras, such as complete refinish of the frame and slide so they look like new, and it feels like work was also done on the internals because it feels tighter/crisper.

And the price tag for this was $0... including the shipping back to S&W.

I've also had the experience of Customer Service mailing out small replacement parts (springs, pins, etc) for my 4006CHP and PC 945, all gratis, without me asking for it when I called intending to buy the stuff... it just showed up with an $0 invoice.

Yep.. I really feel "abused" by them :D

I hope any new bidders actually read your feed back which is posted. This is a great heads up that any bidders should actually read the feed back.

I once had a very nice, but well used Model 64-3. Great gun, very accurate, it just shot 1 inch left at 25 yards. For everyone.
So S&W took it back, they said they test fire it and a computer lets them know how much to move the barrel in the frame to zero it. Problem was, they cracked the frame.
A very nice woman from Customer Service called, apologized for breaking the gun and told me a brand new one was on the way. I was floored, I figured a new frame with the old parts, but, no, a brand new in box, round butt (with Model 66 striations) Model 64-7? showed up at my dealer. Great service, second to none, although Glock has always treated me like gold as well.

I took a few quick ones of it right after getting it back. I was going to wait as I believe I'll have some excellent-condition Delrin grips waiting for me at the post office (thanks jed) but I'm too impatient.

According to the invoice the following have been examined and adjusted to S&W specifications

REPAIRED: REFINISH COMPLETE GUN
REPAIRED: REPLACE GUIDE PLUG
REPAIRED: REPLACE SPRINGS AS NEEDED
REPAIRED: COMPLETE UPDATE
REPAIRED: INSPECTED/TESTED & PASSED

I've never had a really negative transaction online and I've got a good number under my belt. This was the most negative one I've had but I have a hard time saying it was negative at all considering how it turned out. It was perhaps more trying of my patience than negative. Patience is certainly a virtue of mine that needs some honing anyway.

Additionally, as I've gotten older I've learned that if you go into something with no expectations you'll usually be rewarded and I would say SMITH AND WESSON truly rewarded me for it. Needless to say, I plan on buying many more Smiths now than I likely would have as funds allow. I figure it's the least I can do to support a company that is that diligent in its efforts to make their product right even if they had nothing to do with it being wrong.

How about some pictures?!?!? (Hey, jed has a great idea. When he sells something he sends a product that is BETTER than described, great concept. The pistol looks even better now but my wife took the camera to my kindergartner's wrestling meet. I'll get another pic or two soon.)

I found S&W's customer service to be the best in the business.

Example; When I took over as our armorer at my job I found the guy who used to have the job left many a chore for me. I found a near new 5906 with a cracked frame (freak deal with those guns) that we had bought in the early '90s, gun had been on a shelf better than 15 years due to the crack.
With one phone call S&W sent me a pick-up tag for UPS for the gun, rebuilt it on a new frame and shipped it back, no charge.

Im so happy for you that you got it all resolved. Now when do we see some targets from the range!?
Alex

It looks great. Smith & Wesson takes care of it's customers for sure. If you just look at the quality of work they have done since the beginning you can see that. I'm glad you got everything worked out and that the seller has changed his behavior. Now he just needs to learn how to spell. Cheers, Daniel.

Well, I hope things work out for me at Smith and Wesson.
I'm sending my new to me 586 to them that has a very bad push off problem.
I have never sent a gun to any one for repairs, so I hope my experience with Smith is a pleasant one.

Their warranty states that any S&W firearm they receive in an unsafe condition will be returned to factory specifications. I would imagine that push-off is much more serious than finish wear, a missing rail, a non-functioning mag disconnect and bad extractor so I'm thinking you'll be golden.

I have a new question and instead of a new thread I'm going to ask hoping you guys aren't completely fed up with this thread. Are the external dimensions of full-size 3rd Gen 9s and 40s the same? I swear the slide on my 4046TSW was a bit thicker, top to bottom, than my new sweety. I always thought they were the same but in feel and looks in the SCSW they look slightly different but the photos seem to be taken at slightly different depths.

I really appreciate all the comments gentlemen,
Scott

What's a push off problem?

Alright this width comparison has been on my mind for a while so I'll bust out the caliper and guns. I'll start with the dimensions sent to me about a 3953 I was thinking about buying:

3953
slide width: 0.920"
frame width: 0.738"
grip width: 1.075" at widest point

6946
slide width: 0.920"
frame width: 0.750" and 1"
grip (Hogue wraparound) width: 1.36" at widest point

6906
slide width: 0.925"
frame width: 0.750" and 1"
grip (factory delrin) width: 1.275" at widest point

Shorty 40
slide width: 0.925"
frame width: 0.860" and 0.975"
grip (factory delrin) width: 1.260" at widest point

These are the only examples I have on hand. Maybe a PC Shorty 40 is not an accurate comparisons with a standard 6906, but they seem pretty well the same in dimensions, though Shorty 40 is slightly wider in smaller frame width (perhaps for beefed up slide rails).

The thing I was interested in was max grip width, where the single stacks have an advantage of about 0.2".

I finally got out to the range. We've either had sub-zero temps or the range driveway was plugged with snow. I noticed yesterday that the driveway had been blown out so with Jr. at kindergarten, Juniorette at preschool, and my visit to the taxman completed I headed out to the range. (Part of the gunfire was celebrating that visit ;) ).

Anyway, I took my LCP, Melonite 4566 and the subject of the thread out. Here's a couple of shots of the range. I'm on the south side, the shelter is west and berm is east. The trap range is to my left. A state highway runs north-south about 300 feet west of the shelter and my "city" is on the west side of the highway. Cost for membership is $10 per year and I think a key costs you a buck or two:

It was a tropical 25 degrees out today compared to the last few weeks.

I forgot to bring more than two mags worth of ammo for the 4566 which was disappointing but it still worked very well. The LCP was better than the last time I shot it, I had a one-hole 7-round group from 3 yards ;) .

I ran 125 rounds through the 5946 and it didn't miss a beat. The trigger seems quite stiff though, smooth, but stiff. I've got some small items to get from Brownell's so I may have to pick up some reduced power mainsprings for it.

Here it is halfway through its run:

Then the final 65 rounds on the target at 12 yards, four feet of snow makes a pretty good stand! I did get a little squirrelly on a couple of shots as can be noted:

Well, thank you for all the comments and patience in tolerating this thread. I've definitely gotten the shooter that I wanted, it just took some time getting there.

The 5946's a great gun. I have a few. They feel like they'd last forever.
