Finally found some rare handgun ammo in Macon!

My LGS and local Wally World have been out of three rare types of handgun ammo that I shoot a lot.

So . . . since my wife needed to go to Maconga today (Macon, GA) to visit a friend in the hospital, I volunteered to drive and drop her off.

I headed to Academy Sports first. Two of the three calibers of "rare" ammo, .38 Spl. and .357, there were out of . . . but they did have some off brand type, as well as Blazer in the third rare type . . . .45ACP. NO WAY!

After I picked her up, and had a great seafood dinner, we headed to Bass Outdoor Shop.

NO .38 SPL OR .357 MAG . . . but they did have a few boxes of Golden Saber in 185 gn., .45ACP, and some Winchester self defense 230gn. hollowpoint. Neither type was what I wanted . . . but at least a store HAD a few boxes of something.

Thus, I walked out with a couple of boxes of that rare .45ACP stuff. I almost bought a couple of boxes of Hornady .357 XTP bullets to reload . . . til I looked at the price!

There was a time in America when those three brands were available, since they were still "popular."

PS: I guess it is time to set up to pour my own lead bullets. I've got a thousand or so Federal primers and a couple of pounds of Unique . . . and lots of brass. Then again, I'm too busy to reload much right now.

Wow must need a separate room for 8000 rounds. Got me beat by a long shot. Only have: 550 rounds of 45ACP, 550 rounds 9mm, 200 rounds .223, and 250 rounds .22lr. Do need to pick up some .22WMR, but that doesn't seem to be rare. This should get me through next shooting season, although my wife says she wants to try some shooting this year, so who knows.

Lets see here
You can get 23 boxes of .9mm in a .50 caliber ammo can.
I use a sandwich bag, put in a 100 rounds, 23 boxes no problem.
You can get only 20 boxes of .45 in a ammo can, no baggies, 20 boxes is just about to heavy.
My motto, buy when ever you can and when ever you can afford it
Edit=my wife has a .9mm 1911, Springfield, loaded model, she has a blast shooting it.

Just before Xmas I was at Wally with the wife. They had 45 and 38 ammo so I picked up a couple of each. (They had a 4 box at a time limit).
A few months earlier I stopped at an appliance/gun/furniture/grocery store. Their ammo was stacked in shelves and some haphazardly in boxes on the floor. There on the floor among the 9MM and 9x18 were 12-15 dusty boxes of .380 with faded $12.99 stickers. I don't shoot much .380, and I already had 5-6 boxes at home, but I felt I just had buy three. Heck they may be "antique ammo"?

I have 50 rounds of .45 ACP left. Waiting for the price to go back down before I pick more up. Places around here still have plenty though, it seems.

Funny how things go.
Get it when you can for a price you think if reasonable.
I havent bought anything but .22 ammo in the past year.
Except for 600 rounds of 38 wad cutter a gut had at a show for $100 smackers at about Xmas time.
Other than that.
I just wont/cant spend the 40 bucks for 44 ammo or 45 acp.

i got some bass pro gift cards for xmas.. drove out there this week. they had handgun ammo but it was so much more than i can get for elsewhere. interstingly hornady leverevoltion 45.70 was 3 dollars cheaper than rem lead ammo 45.70
all their guns are marked at full msrp and their "sale" guns are still more than i could pay at a local mom & pop shop. plus the local gun only shop has used guns to pick from and knowledgable sales staff i guess when i need an orvis or sage fishing rod i will use those cards

Next time you are up in Macon, you might try Eagle Gun Range, 109 Woodfield Drive. They are a shop/indoor range and usually have a good selection.

Gun store prices, maybe, but any port in a storm.

Actually, when I shot of lot of competitions I reloaded a lot each week, and still have my bench set up in the 'man cave.'

Unfortunately, we had a 25 year old FTL ("Failure To Launch") return home after years of not finishing at an expensive private school and from trying to get rich quick, to try to finish a local AA degree . . . and he took the 'man cave' . . . him and his large dog and cat. My wife assures me it won't be forever . . . but I now go into the nasty pig's sty to get something out of the safe.

Bottom line . . . I don't have anywhere else to set up my reloading stuff.

I do appreciate the offer though and one day, if the good Lord is willing, I'll be able to clean up the nastiness and reclaim my little quiet place of refuge again!

In the meantime, I just try to grin and bear it.

Was in BuyMart 2 weeks ago and the actually had the 250 round UMC yellow Maxi-box .... for $94!!!! Last time I even saw some of those they were about $50!

So components here are around $73/500 230 gr FMJ; new brass is nearly $20/100; primers @ 32/k; throw in the powder & nothing for your time and that adds up close to the 37 cents apiece for the new ones....

Tom, in answer to your question, a bunch of it is at Bo Barrow's NAPA in Butler. When you were at Academy in Maconga, you were an easy 45-50 minutes from Bo's.

I had meant to go by there and see what he had when you first posted, but today is the first chance I've had. I just left there a few minutes ago.

It ain't cheap, but he's got ammo.

Here are a few examples:

1000 rd cases Wolf 7.62x39 $350.00 I counted 20 cases on the floor.

Remington 125 gr. jsp .357 mag box of 50 $22.99

There is, literally by weight, tons of ammo on the floor. All the ammo is displayed in cases, with the tops cut off, not just a few boxes stacked on a shelf. I didn't get all the prices, because there were at least 30 people shopping, but he has cases and cases of .38 special of several brands, thousands and thousands of rounds of 9mm, .40, .223, etc. I saw cases of Blazer .44 mag, .357 mag.

It has been like that in his store since before Christmas. I don't know about .380. I don't shoot that, and I didn't ask.

There ain't no ammo shortage in Butler, Georgia.

The shortage now is reasonably priced ammo. I can get anything I want for a price. Last time I used an indoor range while out of town a box of 9mm Rem was 20 bucks. I ask the guy to give me a break and I would buy 3 boxes to shoot at his range. He replied I only have 4 boxes to sell they are 20 dollars a box. I hated to do it but I needed to kill a little time spent 40 dollars on ammo 100 rounds and I have thousands at home. But I had a good time and have spent more doing other things and didn't enjoy myself.

I buy .45acp factory when I can, but I reload for everything I shoot, except .22lr of course. I'be been reloading and casting for almost 3 decades, stockpiling everything I could for almost that amount of time, so this ammo shortage hasn't slowed me down one bit.

Gloat:

Primers: 28,000 assorted
Powder: 65lbs assorted
brass: 8066+ assorted
bullets: 18,000+ assorted
lead alloys: too much to count, probably 4K lbs or more.

Loaded ammo: rimfire 3250+
centerfire 15,500+

What shortage?
Did I run out and hoard all this in '08? No, I just hang onto everything.
I have been trying to tell people I know for years and years, buy what you can, put it back, replenish when you can. They looked at me like I'd came from another planet. Who's cryin' now?
In case your wondering, yes I did count it all, I keep a pretty careful talley of what comes in and goes out, it helps when reloading so you don't load the same caliber over and over.
Of course all that is from at least 2 decades of accumulating, to go out and buy it now (let alone find it) would break a person, but dogged persistance pays.

I've actually got more ammo on hand, now, during this ammo shortage than I ever did when he was always available.

I just don't want to shoot it now. I just want to pick up a box or two here and there. I never buy in large quantities but come back from Wally with a box of 9, 30-30 or 40....every now and then.

I used to shoot military bench rest and would shoot about fifty rounds of 30-06 each month....but I just don't want to shoot it up now, when supplies are low and reloading components are out of sight. I haven't bought primers in years.
