I went out today looking for a .357 mag S&W specifically a 4" 686 7 shot, I was able to find two used ones, one without the internal lock but with a lock on the triggerguard, the other with an internal lock.

The one without the internal seems to have had a trigger job, and the cylinders were slightly chamfered, it did have a few scratches but appeared to have not been shot much. The one with the internal lock was very dirty, the groove around the cylinder was more worn, and the trigger didn't feel nearly as good.

So now I am a proud owner of a 686-5 without an internal lock and a very nice trigger pull, DA is very smooth, and SA is super light I'm guessing about 2 pounds maybe a little less. When I did my part I got a 7 shot group about 1.5 inches at 15 yards off hand with cheap 158gr JSP Independance ammo, so I'm happy. I am gonna load up some 125gr XTPs and see how they do pretty soon, I think I might be able to get some better groups.

I think I may have overpaid a bit at $575 but, the other less desirable gun was 599 firm, they were the only used ones in town, and I really wanted it so I'm pretty happy. My PC is craped out atm and my old one doesn't have a card reader so as soon as I find my cameras USB cable I'll post up some pics.

congrats on the big purchase. I have yet to pick up a 686+ for myself but have a 4" and a 6" 6 shot and love them both. The 4" balances soooo nice in the hand and the 6" is prob. the most accurate of the batch. take good care of her. Ps pics are always welcome.
