Finally Made a Choice

Was deciding between 586-1 and this 686-6. Decided to go with the 686 based on a little better condition and price. Out the door for $640. After a few hours of in-depth cleaning and polishing I am even more happy with my first SS S&W Revolver. Hope I did well, please let me know what you think?

I haven't seen a 586 or 686 in months, for any price. New or pre-owned. $640 might sound a bit steep, but it's real hard to wear one out. Good decision.

After having regrets about selling my long-owned 2.5" 686-3 a couple of months ago for an immense profit, I finally found a suitable replacement for it yesterday while standing in line to buy a ticket for the gun show...A fellow ahead of me pulled a blue box from his knapsack in anticipation of the doors opening, and I made my arthritic knees work fast enough to be the first to ask about it...He showed me a 2.5" 686-5 (later dated to 1998 per SCSW) seven-shooter with original Hogue monogrip...It was filthy from many trips to the range, and he would not come off his $700 asking price...I disappointed the gathering crowd by peeling off one Benjamin for each chamber in that cylinder, and tucking my prize safely under my arm before heading inside and having to listen to the incessant question, "Are you selling your gun, sir?"...

When I got home it cleaned up very nicely, and now rests comfortably in my safe...As a bonus it also has one of the finest triggers I've seen lately on a factory issued Smitty......Ben

I've sold 2 pre lock 686s 4 inch one with box tools 875 one just the gun 800 in the last month

You got a great deal. About 20 years ago, I had two 586 guns and they not only looked beautiful, they shot extremely well. One day I picked up a brand new blued Python and got rid of both 586 Smiths because I thought who needs them, I have the best? Well today my Python sits in the safe because it's worth too much. I did fire it some over the years and also researched the Python. What I learned is the 586/686 is a better gun overall mechanically. I started searching for a 686 and found a 686-6 that basically had no mileage at all. Just shot 200 rounds last weekend (1/2 38 spl & 1/2 .357 mag) and very happy to have this gun again.

I'm not sure this 4" M686+ is my favorite revolver but it ranks way up there. The way the OP's gun looks makes me thing he did REALLY WELL at that price!

Especially in today's climate and high demand for guns.

I just picked up a 4" 686-6 a few months ago. For some reason I thought I paid $800+ for it because it only had one box of ammo through it. Just looked it up and I actually paid $630 for it, so you're right there on price. Some people don't care for the key and MIM parts, but having owned two 586 brand new 20 years ago, I can say this 686 has better fit, finish and trigger than the 586's I used to have. I have a Python I bought 25 years ago (safe queen) and I actually prefer the internal firing pin.
