FINGER AMPUTATION

When my best friend's father was about 10 years old, he was told by his parents to split some wood. His older brother, as they are prone to do, was pestering him. He would put his finger on the piece of wood to be split. After doing it a number of times......you guessed it, the brother cut it off!!

The parents retrieved the finger, put it on ice, and they all went to the hospital. The finger was reattached. The younger brother could not sit down for a week, when they got home, and the the older brother was told "it served him right for being so stupid"!

True story.

To the OP, I hope everything goes nicely for you.

Hell, I have already told stories about being Killed in WWI, captured and killed in both theatre of WWII, Korea has me escaping thru Russia and VN---well I was in dang nearly every engagement--some, I was in two at one time.
Have I told you about the gulf war and having Sadam in my sights but was ordered NOT to kill him ?
After all of those this one should be real easy---I am formulating it as we speak.

Blessings

I still have all the parts I was born with, pretty much. Just lotsa wear and tear.
I did get the tip of one of my fingers torn off by a spinning router bit. Tore the flesh off down to the bone. Didn't hurt all that much but bled like crazy.
After the damaged flesh was removed and the remaining flesh was pulled over the end of the bone and stitched up, it didn't really hurt all that bad.
After about a month it was looking fingerlike again. Feels weird but it's just the tip of a finger.
I turned down the prescription for narcotics and got some naproxen instread.

Snub, be careful taking naproxen. I had to take it due to nerve damage in both feet and it helped. BUT, it caused me to get a bout of very high high blood pressure, so doc took me off it and things slowly getting back to normal. I don't like narcotics and was given a large quantity of them after my brain surgery. I stopped taking them after about two weeks so bottle still sitting on the counter--untouched. I still have some pain, but usually is gone as fast as it appears.

Snub, watch out for naproxen. I had to take it for quite awhile due to nerve damages in both feet. I'm my case, it caused my blood pressure to skyrocket, so he took me off it and things are returning to normal. After my brain surgery, thast doc gave me around 200 or so norco pills to kill pain. About two weeks after surgery, I stopped taking them and still have quite a few left. I still get quick singes of pain but, the pain stops as quickly as it started.

Instead of giving a high 5 it will be a high 4 1/2, especially the first couple days. ;)

Good luck and may God guide your surgeon's hands.

Lots of injuries over the years from construction work and skiing, the worst (other than my back) were the fingernails that were torn out. Those fingers were touchy for several months, but they healed.

If a child gets a finger tip cut off and it's above the first knuckle, the finger tip will usually grow back, nail and all.

Brother in law lost his right pinky. Motorcycle wreck broke it to the point it wouldn't heal correctly. Dr. Took the whole bones out to the wrist. Said cutting it off at the base would let it catch on everything. I think he has some phantom stuff. Still wants to wiggle it (brain didn't forget how).

We call him 9 occasionally. Or my personal pet name is Jimmy the Finger. His name is Jimmy and he's Greek.

On a plus note, those tine subcompact pistols are no problem now. No pinky to hang off the grip!

was Brian Williams there?

Save the tip and let it dry out to make a charm for around your neck. It will go well with the necklace you made from the ears of the viet cong you killed while on sniper duty in Cambodia during Desert Storm during your stint with "The Company". Tell people you lost your finger because you decided to take the chips (think "Casino").
If you're gonna make up a story make it a good one ;)

8 1/2 fingers

almost 40 years ago I had a crushing injury to my right hand, a diesel engine fell on it crushing middle two finger tips. While in ER the surgeon (who BTW was talented and well known) told me he wanted to amputate at second knuckle, I was in pain and thought well that's the breaks. A good friend much older spoke up and said "there's enough hide to make a flap over the bone at the first knuckle, this guy needs his grip to hold a wrench". The doctor started to object citing the black and dirty appearance of my wounds, my friend said "the black stuff is grease ever'body knows germs can't live in grease." Then he held up a hand with 4 stubs "I been there I know what it's like"
The surgeon changed his mind and now I still have enough grip to hold a wrench or a handgun, if I had them cut one knuckle lower I would be difficult to get a good grip on a full size 3rd gen.

Phantom pains/feelings persisted for almost 6 months, cold was a problem first winter. The tips were sensitive for a year or so right on the ends, now I can drum then on hard surfaces no problem.

I was back to work a few days later with one hand in a sandwich bag to keep it clean and catch occasional light bleeding .

The stubs as my friend and I call them are our ID badges in "the Stub Club" I won't bore you with all the short finger jokes that followed.

It didn't slow me down a bit, I retired last week after a long career as a master diesel mechanic and heavy duty wrecker operator.

I was telling amputee jokes in the ER right up until they put me under. You will do just fine I am sure, don't let anyone tell you different!

Now I can be more descriptive in sign language when I flip someone off I can be moderately POed (right finger)
or thoroughly hacked off (left full size finger). I think of it as having a carbine and a rifle.

Thanks to exercise, therapy and mechanical advantage of shorter lever my grip strength actually increased.

Good luck and prayers my friend.
Welcome to the stub club!

PS a few years ago I almost lost the tip of the pinkie on the same hand, the doctor stitching that injury up looked at the adjacent fingers and said "there seems to be a pattern developing here".
