I received my Model 27 Classic back from S&W after some extractor rod work and noticed bluing missing on the barrel yoke in front of the chamber. The gun wasn't missing the bluing before I sent it off to S&W.

Any idea how this happened? Is it it worth mentioning to S&W? I bought this gun to commemorate the birth of my son.

How OCD / anal are you ? Some would be driven insane by the slightest flaw, real or imagined . Myself, I buy guns to shoot and I enjoy shooting a lot. I stuff them in holsters and carry them hunting and fishing. Those two small spots, which are hard to spot , wouldn't bother me in the least. At most I would dig out my bottle of Oxpho-Blue and touch them up and go on with enjoying the gun.

Given that it's on a "use" location, I wouldn't be concerned even for a collectible.

I agree, that WOULD bother me too -- and it has nothing to do with being OCD or anal...

That said, I'd use some Brownell's Oxpho Blue "cream formula" on it and call it good.

Good luck.

Guns are tools. The 1911 actually looks better with some indications of use.

"I bought this gun to commemorate the birth of my son."

Great idea and good reason for buying an awesome Smith. Be hard to sell or trade off though.

Thanks fellas, may try some Oxpho Blue Cream on it.

I too am inclined to agree with those, who would leave it alone, but it is your gun. I think that any attempt to re blue it will be temporary---it will always be there,--that's just how it is. I hope you do not screw it up and make it worse.(reminds me of a 29 I used to own with a small spot on the side plate --just could not leave it alone........)

Many years ago, when I bought my first Jeep CJ, the fellow who owned the dealership came out just as I was getting ready to drive it off the lot.

He stuck his head in the window, thanked me for my business, then told me, "Go down the road about a mile and you'll come to a dirt road on the left. Go down that road and get it dirty and get a couple of small scratches on it. If you don't you'll never use it for what it's made for."

Well, I had gotten that out of my system with a couple of Bronco's, but he was right. That was a neat little Jeep trail.

Wouldn't bother me a bit. :D

keep it! i sent in a 629 back in 2005 for a warranty repair it came home with tool marks and dings virtually all over gun. sent it back for these marks as before s & w got it the gun finish was flawless. s & w put it to a buffing wheel with a blind gorilla operator and made the surface uneven and turned the extractor rod housing on barrel into a sharp knife. you look down barrel it looks like waves in water. figured id just keep it at this point. the warranty work was done and it shoots straight. its not worth the headache you will suffer. s & w nowadays will even warn you if you inquire beforehand on the phone they have no way to ensure it will come home without new tooling marks if sent in for warranty work. i will never send in another gun to them unless it really needs it.

Bftx-Congratulations on the birth of your son, I'm sure he'll grow up to cherish his birthday gun.

I'm sure the tech who worked on your gun knew about the bluing and decided to ignore it and that bothers me. The quality of these "tools" will continue to fall if we the consumer don't hold the manufactures accountable. I would be pissed and would probably contact Smith over the matter. In fact I might even go as far as sending the CEO an email and picture.

Stamps, coins, cars, china cups, (the list goes on) are all "tools" yet we collect them with a passion.

The band Ten Years After did a song in the early 70s (I think) called, I'd Love to Change the World.

I can't.

This thread has gone a l-o-n-g way in helping me accept the cosmetic flaws milled into my 640 Pro. Thanks to all the respondents for that!

If I took my car to the dealer for a tune-up or oil change and it came back with paint damage I'd be more than upset. My truck is a tool too and I use it every day. But I take care of it and at 14 years old and 135,000 miles it drives and performs like new. I'd be even more upset that someone called me OCD or anal because I take care of things I've worked hard for. I'm a S&W fan and always have been. But I've stopped patronizing more than one business because of poor service. Just my 2 cents.
