We bought some lake property years ago, it was in a small development with around twenty houses on frontage, another five or so on the other side of the road. We spent weekends there, my in-laws had gone in with us. When we first moved in this lovely black Labrador came to visit, she was the sweetest thing. My FIL fell in love with her, we all loved her. We later learned that she lived at the "T" at the bottom of the entrance road to this little development, first house on the right after the left turn to our place another six doors or so down the road. After a few weekends we started noticing that when we made that turn, here she would come from the house where she lived, she would run down the road with us to our place and stay most of the time, going home when we finally turned in. The first 4th of July she came and whined most of the day, very disturbed by the noise, we would comfort her. Her name was Pepper I would guess her age around five or six, just starting to grey the way Labs do around the muzzle. The owner of Pepper actually came down to our place one day to "retrieve" her dog, blaming us for feeding her which we never did. She put a leash on her and walked her home, she eventually came back.
We later learned from another neighbor that the owner's had a couple renegade grandkids that had stuck firecrackers in Pepper's ears which caused her to be terrorized of loud noises. There ought to be a special place in hell or massive Karmic debt for people that mistreat animals in that way. The owners were no saints either, obvious in the way the poor thing would come running when she heard our car or saw us, all we did was love her.
